When Karabo Meso was still in school, she found herself in a one-on-one batting session with none other than AB de Villiers. For most teenagers, it would have been a surreal memory. For Meso, it became a turning point. She credits that encounter with teaching her how to manage emotions under pressure, something she would later put to use when she scored a century in the Schools SA20 competition, a stage designed to spotlight the country’s brightest cricketing talents.

That maturity, coupled with her natural skill behind the stumps, is what convinced South Africa’s selectors to fast-track her development. At just 16, she was named in the senior squad for their 2024 series against Sri Lanka. Even if she wasn’t quite ready to command a permanent place in the XI, her presence around the senior setup was a signal: here was a player the future would be built around.

Meso’s early career is decorated with glimpses of rare promise. At the 2023 Under-19 T20 World Cup, she effected eight dismissals, more than any other wicketkeeper in the tournament and was rewarded with a spot in the official “Team of the Tournament.” Later that year, she starred at the African Games for South Africa’s Emerging side, finishing again as the most prolific keeper while helping her team clinch a silver medal.

A month later in March, she was included in the ODI squad for the same tour. Though her opportunities have been limited, just three ODI innings so far, with 28 runs to her name, her trajectory is clear. South Africa, a team that has been searching for long-term stability in the wicketkeeping role, has placed faith in her rare combination of glovework, temperament, and batting ability.

Still only 17, Meso represents the next generation of South African cricket: fearless, multi-dimensional, and eager to prove that youth is no barrier at the highest level. She may not yet have the weight of statistics behind her name, but every dismissal behind the stumps, every run under pressure, and every lesson learned in the senior setup is a step toward fulfilling the promise that so many already see in her.
