Hayley Matthews completes 5000 International Runs and 2500 ODI Runs

Hayley Matthews, 26, achieved multiple milestones during the second ODI against India, where she surpassed 5000 runs in international cricket, crossed the 2500-run mark in the ODI format, and chasing a daunting target of 359, led from the front, smashing a brilliant century—her seventh in ODIs and the first by a Windies player against India—scoring 106 runs.

Matthews made her international debut in September 2014 against New Zealand, opening the innings and scoring 14. Two months later, in November 2014, she debuted in ODIs against Australia, making an impressive start with 55 runs. During the same series, she showcased her talent by scoring three consecutive half-centuries, amassing 241 runs in the four-match series—a glorious start to her ODI career.

In May 2015, during the West Indies tour of Sri Lanka, Matthews delivered a standout performance in the third T20I, taking four wickets and scoring an unbeaten 32 to earn her first Player of the Match award in T20Is. A defining moment in her career came during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2016, where she played a pivotal role in West Indies’ triumph. In the final against Australia, she scored her first T20I half-century, a blazing 66 off 45 balls, and claimed a wicket, earning the Player of the Match award as West Indies secured their maiden T20 World Cup title.

In the 2017 ODI World Cup, Matthews contributed 158 runs in seven innings. She scored her maiden ODI century in 2018 against South Africa, smashing 117 in the third ODI and earning the Player of the Match award. In May 2019, she added another feather to her cap by scoring her first T20I century, an unbeaten 107 against Ireland. A month later, in June 2019, she crossed 1000 ODI runs.

Matthews was the leading run-scorer in the 2022 ODI World Cup, amassing 260 runs in eight matches. Her stellar form continued in the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, where she was West Indies’ leading run-scorer with 130 runs in four innings. In October 2023, she recorded her highest T20I score, a scintillating 132 against Australia, marking her second T20I century. During the same series, she crossed the 2000-run milestone in T20Is.

The year 2024 has been phenomenal for Matthews. She has already scored three centuries, including her career-best unbeaten 141 in the ODI format earlier this year.

With over 5000 international runs, Hayley Matthews remains an integral part of the Windies batting lineup, consistently delivering match-winning performances.
