Women’s Big Bash League team Sydney Thunder struck a 2-year deal with young sensation Phoebe Litchfield. Litchfield, who rose to prominence in the last year with her Australian under-19 selection has been booked by the electric green franchise for the next two years.
Phoebe is 16 years old and bats right-handed. She was selected for the Governor General’s XI team which played against New Zealand women earlier this year. She recently also represented New South Wales Women in two games playing against Victoria women and South Australia Women. The young sensation was also selected for Women’s Premier Cricket for Parramatta. Phoebe was also the top run-scorer at the under-18 National Championships. She made 348 runs in the tournament at a splendid average of 43.5.

Talking to centralwesterndaily.com.au, Litchfield described the feeling as surreal. The young batter said, “I’m extremely excited. I’ve been watching the Big Bash hoping to be playing. To be offered a spot in the squad is surreal. It’ll be really good for the development of my cricket. I’m really excited to learn from some of the more experienced players in the team and try to keep getting better.”
Although Phoebe is hopeful of the debut, she doesn’t have high expectations from this season except for loads of learning. “It would be an amazing experience to make my debut. I hope it’s not too far away but I’m not expecting anything this season. It would be a great experience but also a great learning curve at the start of my career”, reported centralwesterndaily.com.au.
New Head Coach of Sydney Thunder, Mr. Trevor Griffin is excited to have a player like Phoebe in the squad. He considers her as an exciting talent and is looking forward to having her on-board for the next two seasons.
Litchfield was a part of Sydney Thunder’s academy program which is delivered to students at secondary schools.
Sydney Thunders will start its WBBL campaign on 18th October when they play Sydney Sixers at North Sydney Oval.
