Brief History of Spain Women’s National Cricket Team
The Spain women’s national cricket team represents the nation in international women’s cricket matches. With the International Cricket Council (ICC) granting full Women’s Twenty20 International (WT20I) status to all its members in April 2018, every Twenty20 match involving the Spanish women’s team and other international sides since 1 July 2018 has held the WT20I status.

The establishment of Madrid Cricket Club in 1975 marked a significant milestone for cricket in Spain, ushering in a new era for the sport. Initially composed of British and Indian players, the club soon transcended cultural boundaries as West Indians and eventually Spanish members joined its ranks. This diverse composition laid the foundation for cricket’s growth within the country.
However, the journey of cricket in Spain faced challenges, as attempts to acquire land for the sport encountered obstacles. The traditional notion of “When you’re in, you’re out” explanations proved impractical, highlighting just one of the many difficulties encountered by cricket clubs in Spain.
In May 2022, during a quadrangular series held in France, the Spain women’s team played their inaugural WT20I matches. Their debut match was against Austria at the Dreux Sport Cricket Club in Dreux, on 5 May 2022, Austria put up a competitive total of 127/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Rabia Iqbal claimed 3 wickets against 25 runs in the 2.3 overs she bowled. In response, Spain struggled to build partnerships and were eventually bowled out for 92 runs in 18.5 overs. Elspeth Fowler was the top scorer with 26 runs, but the rest of the batting lineup couldn’t provide substantial contributions and eventually, Spain lost their maiden international match by 35 runs.
