Cricket World Cup Qualifier: Results

The 2023 World Cup Qualification has come to an end, and it is time to summarise the results. First, we offer you to understand the qualification format. The qualifying tournament took place in June and July 2023 in Zimbabwe. This event was the highlight of the entire selection process, as it was to determine the last two participants in the World Cup – the Pin Up app will ensure you don’t forget to bet on our national team in upcoming events in all sports.

There are ten teams in the tournament: the five worst teams from the 2020-2023 Cricket World Cup Super League, the three best teams from the 2019-2023 Cricket World Cup League 2 and the two best teams from the 2023 Cricket World Cup qualifier playoffs. These teams were divided into 2 groups of 5 each. The top 3 in the group progressed further to the Super Six stage. As a reminder, India (IND) is the host nation, thereby it secured its place in the tournament.

Group Stage – Group A

The teams in Group A were Zimbabwe, the Netherlands, West India, Nepal, and USA. According to the bookmaker, Zimbabwe was considered the favourite. Zimbabwe effortlessly took the top of the group, winning 4 matches out of 4. The team confidently defeated Nepal and smashed the USA with a big score – 400+ runs in ODIs for the first time.

The main clash was between the Netherlands and West India. Both teams unhesitatingly handled Nepal and USA. The climax was the face-to-face encounter. Failing to find a winner in regulation time, the match went to the super overs. Thanks to the sensational actions of a Dutch player Logan Verjus van Beek (who made 30 runs, thus setting a record for the most runs scored by a team in super overs in international cricket), the Netherlands won the match there.

Zimbabwe, Netherlands, and West India went further.

Group B

In Group B were the following teams: Sri Lanka, Scotland, Oman, Ireland, UAE.

Sri Lanka swept away their rivals without odds and took unchallenged supremacy in the group. Scotland, thanks to a 1-wicket win over Ireland, managed to secure their place at the top of the table. Team Oman defeated weaker opponents: UAE and Ireland. Sri Lanka, Scotland, and Oman all progressed to the main Super Six tournament.

Super Six

The Sri Lankan team played a phenomenal performance in this stage, winning 5 out of 5 games. Thus, it took the first place in the group and gained a long-awaited place at the World Cup. The second line was taken by the Netherlands team, winning 3 matches and losing twice to the guys from Sri Lanka. Scotland and Zimbabwe showed very nice games, also winning 3 matches and losing 2. But unfortunately, as per the rules, they couldn’t go any further, scoring lower on the NRR coefficient. This method is taken into account to determine the winners when equal number of points are scored.

Sri Lanka and the Netherlands will compete against the remaining 8 teams in the competitions to be held in October-November 2023 in India.
