The West Indies women’s national cricket team is all set to clash with Ireland Women in a three-match One-Day International (ODI) series. Scheduled to kick off on Monday, June 26, this series holds great significance as it is part of the ICC Women’s Championship, which plays a crucial role in determining qualification for the upcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in India in 2025.
The West Indies Women’s squad, led by the talented all-rounder Hayley Matthews, has announced their 18-member squad for the series. The team has a strong lineup, showcasing the skills and experience of players like Stafanie Taylor, Shemaine Campbelle, and Chinelle Henry. Meanwhile, Ireland Women’s national cricket team has also named their 15-women squad, with Laura Delany leading the charge.
In the ODI format, the West Indies Women have had a dominant run against Ireland Women. Out of the eight matches played between the two teams, the Windies have emerged victorious in seven encounters, leaving Ireland with just one win.
All three matches of the ODI series will be played at the prestigious Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Saint Lucia. This renowned stadium has witnessed numerous thrilling cricket battles.
The West Indies Women’s provisional squad for the ODIs includes some exciting new talent. Ashmini Munisar, a right-arm off-spinner, and Shunelle Sawh, a talented wicketkeeper-batter, have been named in the squad for the first time. Both players have showcased their potential while representing the West Indies Rising Stars Under 19s team. They will join their Rising Stars teammates Zaida James and Djenaba Joseph, who have already gained valuable experience representing the senior team in previous tournaments.
The West Indies Women’s team is boosted by the return of Chinelle Henry, an experienced all-rounder, who has recovered from an injury that kept her out of recent tournaments. This addition adds depth and balance to the squad
Unfortunately, Jane Maguire and Shauna Kavanagh will miss the tour due to injuries, which are notable losses for the Ireland Women’s team. However, the team has been preparing diligently with good weather, intense training sessions, and competitive Super Series action. They have also had practice games against boys’ teams to sharpen their skills. With an exciting young team that continues to improve, the Ireland Women are eager to deliver their best performance on this tour.
With the dominant head-to-head record of the West Indies Women in ODIs, Ireland faces a tough challenge.
