The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary, Mr. Jay Shah, through his Tweet confirmed the development of the league named, the ‘Women’s Premier League’. Mr. Secretary’s Tweet read, “The @BCCI has named the league – Women’s Premier League (WPL). Let the journey begin….”.

Following technical bid submissions on the 23rd of January, today, on the 25th of January, the Women’s Premier League (WPL) had the financial bidding scheduled, and following the intense bidding war, the BCCI has generated INR 4669.99 crores in a total bid which is more than what was generated following the inaugural Men’s IPL base bids in 2008.

The 5 successful bidders from the auction day who’ve acquired bases for the Women’s Premier League (WPL) are Adani Sportsline Private Limited, who’ve acquired the Ahmadabad base for the highest, 1289 crores bid. The Ambani backed, Indianwin Sports Private Limited, who owns the Mumbai Indian follow with a 912.99 crore bid for the Mumbai base.

Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited, who owns the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Men’s Indian Premier League (W-IPL) were next on with 901 crores bid for the Bangalore base. Delhi Capital owners, JSW GMR Cricket Private Limited, acquired the Delhi base for 810 crores, and Capri Global Holdings Private Limited, acquired the last and final, Lucknow base on offer for 757 crores.

Recently, during the tournament’s media rights bid, the Ambani’s backed, Viacom18 emerged as the successful one with a whooping total of INR 951 Crores, which accounts for around INR 7.09 Crores per game for the 2023-27, 5-year cycle.

The Women’s Premier League will see players from the Under-19 age brackets to the senior team, take part when it gets on the road, reportedly from the 4th to the 26th of March. The tournament is highly likely to deliver elite Twenty20 (T20) cricket action as it’ll be played on the back off an Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup and a Senior Women’s T20 World Cup.
