Squad Analysis – Bangladesh Women for 2022 Commonwealth Games Cricket Qualifier

Women’s cricket will be a part of the upcoming Commonwealth Games that will be played in July in England this year. Eight teams will participate in the Commonwealth Games, out of which seven have already qualified. There is just one place for which the Qualifiers will be played among five teams. The five teams that will lock horns against each other for that one spot are Bangladesh, Kenya, Malaysia, Scotland, and Sri Lanka. The Qualifiers will see T20 matches being played. Malaysia will host the event between January 18 and January 24. All five teams have announced their squads.

Here’s a look at Bangladesh’s squad:

Nigar Sultana (c, wk), Rumana Ahmed, Sharmin Akhter, Nahida Akter, Sanjida Akter Meghla, Suraiya Azmin, Fargana Hoque, Fahima Khatun, Murshida Khatun, Salma Khatun, Lata Mondal, Ritu Moni, Sobhana Mostary, Shamima Sultana (wk), Fariha Trisna

Nigar Sultana:

The wicket-keeper batter is the captain of Bangladesh. Though she is an experienced player with 75 international matches, including 23 ODIs and 52 T20Is under her belt, she has relatively less captaincy experience. She took over the reins in 2021 and has captained Bangladesh in just a couple of ODIs so far.

Rumana Ahmed:

The experienced all-rounder has been playing for Bangladesh since 2011. She is a right handed batter and a right arm leg spinner. She has featured in 107 international matches, including 42 ODIs and 65 T20Is. She has scored 1639 international runs and accounted for 102 wickets. She is a genuine all-rounder of the team.

Sharmin Akhter:

She is a right handed batter and has been around with the Bangladesh team since 2011. She has made 39 international appearances, including 25 ODIs and 14 T20Is. She has mustered 494 international runs, including three half centuries.

Nahida Akter:

The left arm spinner has been in good form since having successful outings with the ball against Zimbabwe in November last year. The wily spinner is a wicket-taking bowler and can trouble any batter when she is on song. She has played 60 international matches since 2015, including 19 ODIs and 41 T20Is. She has 76 wickets to her name.

Sanjida Akter Meghla:

She is a right handed batter and a left arm spinner. She is new to international cricket having played just one T20I so far in 2019. Last year, she was a part of Bangladesh Emerging Women that played against South Africa Emerging Women. If given the opportunity, she would look to make the most of it, ofcourse eyeing the World Cup which is less than two months away.

Suraiya Azmin:

The right arm seamer will make her comeback for Bangladesh after having last played in 2018. She featured in three ODIs and has two wickets in her account. In 2019 she was a part of Bangladesh Emerging Women that played against South Africa Emerging Women. However, she had an ordinary outing in that series as she went wicket-less in five matches.

Fargana Hoque:

The right handed top order batter is one of the most prolific batters of Bangladesh. She holds the record of scoring the highest runs in a T20I innings at the batting position number four. She muscled 110 not out off just 53 balls against Maldives in 2019 to create the record. She has featured in 109 international fixtures, including 41 ODIs and 68 T20Is. She has one century and nine half-centuries in international cricket.

Fahima Khatun:

The right arm leg spinner has been a part of Bangladesh squad since 2013. She has played 18 ODIs and 59 T20Is so far. She has accounted for 38 wickets across the two formats. She can bat lower down the order and provide some useful contributions with the bat.

Murshida Khatun:

The left handed batter is relatively new to the international area having made her debut in 2018. Since then she has featured in 9 ODIs and 10 T20Is. She has registered 315 international runs, including one half century.

Salma Khatun:

The senior pro is one of the most experienced players in the side with 111 international matches to her name. She has played 37 ODIs and 74 T20Is. She is a right handed batter and a right arm off spinner. She has scored 928 international runs, including one half century and picked up 107 wickets, including one four-wicket haul.

Lata Mondal:

The all-rounder has been a part of Bangladesh squad since 2011. She has represented the team in 24 ODIs and 38 T20Is. The right handed batter has scored 632 international runs and with the ball bowling right arm pace, has accounted for 18 wickets.

Ritu Moni:

The right handed batter and right arm seamer has been playing international cricket since 2012. She has featured in 19 ODIs and 30 T20Is. She has mustered 333 international runs and scalped 21 wickets.

Sobhana Mostary:

She made her international debut at the age of just 16 in 2018. She has played 4 ODIs and 3 T20Is in her brief international career so far. She was a part of the Bangladesh squad for the Zimbabwe series as well as ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifiers last year. She is an all-rounder, who is a right handed batter and a right arm seamer.

Shamima Sultana:

She is a wicket-keeper and a right-handed batter. She has represented Bangladesh in 5 ODIs and 37 T20Is between 2014 and 2020. She has scored 583 international runs, including three half centuries and has accounted for 27 dismissals behind the stumps. With Nigar Sultana around, she will be the second wicket-keeper.

Fariha Trisna:

The right arm off spinner made her ODI debut last year against Zimbabwe. In her first match, she picked up 2-17 in 3.2 overs. She has good control with the ball and has the potential to make it big in international cricket.
