ACB’s Twitter Posts indicates a Positive Sign for Women’s Cricket in Afghanistan

Recent developments in Afghanistan on women cricket have brought some sense of hope to the Afghanistan cricket players and fans, after the Taliban takeover of the country saw fading future of women in sports and with the International Cricket Council (ICC)’s policy of considering a country as their member only if both men and women team plays from there, did raise uncertainty over the men’s team as well, the team which despite all the odds performed brilliantly during the T20 World Cup.

However, the past few days have shown some positive signs for the cricket fans especially after a post on Twitter by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) in which they uploaded a picture of two girls playing cricket in an open field. Thus, indicating a return of women on the cricket pitch very soon. The tweet said, “Cricket serves not only as a sport or an entertaining tool in Afghanistan but serves as a source of inspiration & motivation for the younger generation of Afghanistan and is used as a tool for ensuring unity and peace in the country. #Cricket #Love #Hope”

This comes after ICC appointed a committee consisting of Cricket Ireland Chairman Ross McCollum, Cricket South Africa Chair Lawson Naidoo, and Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Ramiz Raja to look after the cricketing activities in Afghanistan and the status of their board (ACB) too.

It is to be noted that just a week ago, ACB appointed a new acting chairman. Their former cricketer Mirwais Ashraf took the responsibility from Azizullah Fazli who had the charge for just two months.

Ashraf responded to ICC’s statement on Afghanistan which as posted by ACB on Twitter, says, “Cricket is a source of aspirations, relations, and hope of 35M Afghans. We are committed to maintaining effective relationships with our new government, the @ICC, and other cricketing nations,”

“We are working to provide full assistance & assurance to the @ICC Board & its working group for Afghanistan about the situation in ACB. @ACBofficials thank them and are looking for their immense support with regards to the status & development of Afghan Cricket.” He added.

Let’s hope we soon get to see the talented Afghanistan Women in action.
