Date Announced for the Women’s T20 Cricket Event at 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games

On June 15, the organizers of the Commonwealth Games announced that women’s T20 cricket will be included as a sport for its 2022 Birmingham edition. It’ll take place from July 29 to August 7 at Edgbaston.

The group stage matches between the eight teams will take place till August 4. The semi-finals are scheduled to take place on August 6. The finals and the match for third place will take place on the same day, i.e., August 7.

“With 11 days of swimming and diving, 8 days of cricket, 8 days of gymnastics, and 7 days of athletics, including the marathon, the summer of 2022 is set for a spectacular home Games,” the official website said.

“The Birmingham 2022 competition schedule features more medal events for women than men for the first time in Commonwealth Games history, as well as a fully integrated para-sport program.”

This is going to be the first time women’s cricket will be played at the Commonwealth Games. The last time cricket was included as a part of the international multi-sport event was in Kuala Lumpur in 1998, when the men’s 50-over competition was played.

Australia, India, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, hosts England, and a country from the Caribbean have all qualified for the event. Apart from England, the other nations to qualify were determined based on the T20I rankings on April 1, 2021.

The players from the Caribbean will represent their own country individually, a qualifying tournament for those nations will decide which team takes West Indies’ spot. The eighth spot in the tournament will be decided on the basis of the qualifying event which is to be held by January 2022.

The 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games is an international multi-sport event for members of the Commonwealth. The 2022 edition of the Commonwealth Games will see the participation of over 5000 athletes from 72 different nations and territories. The Games will begin on July 28 at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham and will conclude on August 8.
