The White Ferns headed into this series against Zimbabwe as heavy favorites, and they certainly didn’t disappoint in the opening match at Dunedin. A massive 180-run victory told the story of a clinical New Zealand side that barely put a foot wrong. Brooke Halliday was the headline act with her incredible 157*, while the bowlers, led by Amelia Kerr’s four-wicket haul, never let Zimbabwe’s chase get off the ground. For the visitors, while Kelis Ndhlovu’s gritty half-century was a bright spot, they struggled to contain the scoring rates at the death and will be feeling the pressure to bridge that gap in quality before the series slips away.

Players to watch out:
Brooke Halliday
Brooke was the undisputed star of the series opener, smashing a career-best 157 not out from just 118 balls. She played with incredible intent, finding the boundary 24 times and clearing it once to help New Zealand post a massive total. It was her maiden ODI century, and the way she accelerated after reaching her hundred—scoring her final 57 runs off only 25 deliveries—completely took the game away from Zimbabwe.
Kelis Ndhlovu
Kelis showed a lot of grit at the top of the order for Zimbabwe, fighting through a tough Powerplay to score a solid 52 off 109 balls. While the required run rate eventually climbed too high, her patience was key in keeping the innings steady after an early wicket fell. She hit two fours and a six during her stay, eventually falling to Nensi Patel, but she can certainly hold her head high for being the only Zimbabwean to cross the fifty-run mark in this match.
Amelia Kerr
The White Ferns captain had a brilliant day with the ball, finishing with impressive figures of 4/35 from her 10 overs. She proved to be the ultimate partnership-breaker, ripping through the middle order and accounting for key wickets like Loreen Tshuma and Christabel Chatonzwa. Although she had a quieter outing with the bat, scoring just 15 before being caught off Chatonzwa’s bowling, her leadership and clinical leg-spin were instrumental in securing the 180-run victory.
Precious Marange
Precious had a busy day on the field, leading the bowling attack with a full 10-over shift that yielded the wicket of opener Emma McLeod. She finished with figures of 1/52, showing good control during the middle overs before the New Zealand batters really began to tear off at the death. While she didn’t have much luck with the bat, being cleaned up for a duck by Jess Kerr to end the match, her experience was vital in trying to contain a rampant Kiwi lineup.
Pitch:
Expect a flat track that continues to favor batters, following New Zealand’s massive 354-run total earlier this week. The surface offers even bounce and good carry, though the cool morning air and potential cloud cover may provide seamers with early swing during the first 10 overs.
Weather:
The conditions indicates rain with a high of 17°C and a low of 9°C. There is a 65% chance of precipitation during the day and a 55% chance of light rain in the evening, accompanied by 16 mph southwest winds and high humidity at 88%.
