Who is Chinelle Henry, WPL’s newest debutant who made instant impact

Chinelle Henry is a middle-order batter known for her power-hitting and athleticism on the field. She made her international debut in 2013 against New Zealand. However, Chinelle fell out of favor after one year on the ODI team, resulting in a five-year absence. She is also a handy fast bowler, and all of those qualities combined helped her break into the West Indies side in both forms of limited-overs cricket in the space of five months in 2013-14.

After impressing in West Indies’ training camp in early 2018, Henry was called into the side to defend the T20 World Cup title in 2018. The next year, she received a maiden central contract.

In early 2024, Henry picked up 6 for 31, including a hat-trick, against Windward Islands in the Women’s Super50 Cup to seal Jamaica’s title with a game to spare. She was part of Barbados Royals’ title win in the Women’s Caribbean Premier League in 2023 and was subsequently retained as well.

Having played only one franchise tournament, Henry made her WPL debut on February 19, 2025. Henry was called into the tournament by UP Warriorz as a replacement for their captain Alyssa Healy. With big shoes to fill, she came into the tournament nervous yet grateful for the opportunity.

However, Henry lived up to the expectations as she helped the UP Warriorz set a target of 166 after losing wickets in a cluster. Henry batted at a strike rate of 220.00 as she dealt only in boundaries, scoring 33* off just 15 balls, the highlight of which was her 23-run over off the veteran Shikha Pandey.

After an impressive first innings, she had a quiet showing in the second, returning bowling figures of 0/26 (3) and putting down a catch—something rare for the high standards she sets. Yet, as Chinelle makes an eye-catching debut to her WPL career, one can only hope that she continues to flourish.
