Hayley Matthews, Chinelle Henry’s quick-fire knock in vain, fails to secure World Cup spot

The home side, led by skipper Fatima Sana, ended their campaign in the ongoing edition of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup Qualifier 2025 as the only unbeaten side of the tournament, courtesy of their comprehensive seven-wicket win against Bangladesh.

West Indies, led by skipper Hayley Matthews, were up against Thailand, led by skipper Naruemol Chaiwai, in the 15th match of the tournament at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.

Natthakan Chantham stands tall for Thailand with a gritty fifty amidst collapse

The Thailand openers Chanida Sutthiruang and Nattaya Boochatham got their side off to a flying start, with a 30-run opening stand. The pair came out with a positive intent, scoring at a rate of 6 runs an over. Skipper Hayley Matthews cleaned up Chanida Sutthiruang (21 off 18 balls) in the 6th over of the innings, providing the first breakthrough for her side.

Wicket-keeper batter Nannapat Koncharoenkai joined Nattaya Boochatham at the crease, and the duo stitched another crucial 34-run partnership for the 2nd wicket, taking them past the 50-run mark. Aaliyah Alleyne cleaned up Nattaya Boochatham (29 off 42 balls) to provide the 2nd breakthrough for the West Indies in the 16th over of the innings.

Thailand looked poised to post a challenging total for the West Indies. However, a horrible collapse saw them eventually getting bundled out for just 166 with 23 balls to spare. Thailand lost their last 8 wickets for just 102 runs. Natthakan Chantham (66 off 98 balls) was the stand-out performer with the bat for Thailand, scoring a fighting half-century for her side. Wicket-keeper batter Nannapat Koncharoenkai (14 off 35 balls) chipped in with a crucial contribution with the bat for her side.

Afy Fletcher (10-1-20-4) and Aaliyah Alleyne (10-0-41-3) were the standout performers with the ball, while Karishma Ramharack (10-1-26-0) and skipper Hayley Matthews (10-0-54-1) played their part with the ball for the West Indies.

The clinical West Indian top-order fires West Indies to a massive win

Chasing a target of 167, Windies openers Qiana Joseph and Hayley Matthews got their side off to a blazing start with an 81-run opening partnership. The pair tore apart the Thailand bowlers, scoring at a rate of over 13 runs an over. Thipatcha Putthawong broke the stand, by sending Qiana Joseph (26 off 12 balls) back to the pavilion in the 6th over of the run chase, providing the much-needed first breakthrough for Thailand.

Skipper Hayley Matthews (70 off 29 balls) soon followed her back to the pavilion to provide the 2nd breakthrough for Thailand in the 7th over of the run chase. She departed after scoring a breezy half-century. The wicket-keeper batter Shemaine Campbelle joined Chinelle Henry at the crease, and the duo took their side closer to victory with a crucial 41-run partnership for the 3rd wicket. West Indies eventually got over the line with six wickets in hand and 235 balls to spare, completing the run chase inside the 11 overs of their innings.

Chenille Henry (48 off 17 balls) was the other top performer with the bat for the West Indies. Phannita Maya (2.5-0-40-1), Thipatcha Putthawong (3-0-42-1), and Chanida Sutthiruang (3-0-51-1) were the wicket-takers with the ball for Thailand.

The West Indian skipper Hayley Mathews was awarded the Player of the Match for her impressive all-round show, returning with match figures (10-0-54-1) with the ball and scoring (70 off 29 balls) with the bat, her knock included 11 boundaries and a couple of maximums.
