After a rain-affected washout against Sri Lanka, the Australian camp is eager to return to action. “With the washout the other day, it feels like a long time between matches now,” Perry said. “Everyone’s really looking forward to the opportunity to get back out there.”

Perry noted that Australia had the benefit of observing the India-Pakistan match at the same venue, giving them a clearer idea of what to expect from the surface and conditions.

“We got to have a bit of a look at the conditions the other night. It probably hasn’t changed too much from what we expected when we were supposed to play last time,” she explained. “We’ve had two really good training sessions to prepare for what we’ll face tomorrow.”

Having featured in five Cricket World Cups and every T20 World Cup to date, Perry reflected on her journey and the evolution of women’s cricket. “It’s been an incredible opportunity to have the experiences we’ve had as a group. Over the years, the women’s game has grown so much, in quality, depth, and the fan base,” she said.

“Every time you play now, it feels bigger and better. We just want to keep finding new potential and play the best cricket we can, cricket that’s exciting and challenging.”

When asked about Australia’s long-standing dominance, Perry credited the support systems in place and the competitive spirit within the team. “We’re incredibly lucky with the wonderful support we have back home, full-time domestic structures that breed great depth,” she noted.

“As a group, we love the challenge of finding new ways to get better. The rise of global franchise leagues has increased competition, which makes it even more exciting for us to keep pushing our standards.”

Perry also reminisced about Australia’s 2012 World Cup win at the same venue. “Whenever you come back to a place you’ve been before, certain memories just come flooding back. Alyssa and I were saying, ‘Oh yeah, this is the ground where that happened,’” she smiled.

With Colombo pitches showing slower characteristics, Perry discussed how Australia’s batting unit has adapted.

“We don’t have a specific conversation just with the top three, it’s with the whole batting group,” she clarified. “We’re lucky to have great depth, and it’s never going to be everyone’s day. The approach is to be positive but adaptable and smart depending on the conditions and opposition. There’s a blueprint, but adaptability is key.”

Perry also had high praise for Pakistan’s Fatima Sana, who has often cited Perry as her inspiration. “She’s an amazing player and a real talisman for Pakistan,” Perry said warmly. “I love how much passion and energy she plays with, and you can see what a great teammate she is… She’s awesome to have in the game, so it’s always nice when we get a chance to play against her.”

Finally, reflecting on her evolving role and Australia’s focus on progress, Perry emphasized the importance of embracing change.

“You’ve always got to be open to the idea that you can do things better or differently,” she said. “In our environment, everyone shares that mindset. In elite sport, you can’t stand still, there’s always innovation and growth. The only other option is going backwards.”

As Australia prepares for their next challenge against Pakistan, Perry’s words capture the team’s enduring hunger, a blend of experience, adaptability, and relentless pursuit of excellence that continues to define Australian women’s cricket.
