Australia kicked off their 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup campaign with a clinical 6-wicket win over Sri Lanka, chasing down 93 with ease. They followed that up with a dominant 60-run victory over New Zealand, bowling them out for 88 after setting a target of 148. Next, Australia cruised to a 9-wicket win over Pakistan, chasing 82 without breaking a sweat. In their most recent outing against India, Grace Harris led the charge with a composed 40, supported by Tahlia McGrath (32) and Ellyse Perry (32), guiding Australia to a total of 151. Defending that total, Australia restricted India’s scoring, and a late flurry of wickets sealed a 9-run win, with Annabel Sutherland (2/22) and Sophie Molineux (2/32) shining with the ball.
On the other hand, South Africa opened their campaign with a commanding 10-wicket win over the West Indies, chasing down 118 with ease. However, they stumbled in their next game, failing to defend 124 against England and losing by 7 wickets. Undeterred, they bounced back with a resounding 80-run victory over Scotland, bowling them out for 86 in pursuit of 166. Most recently, a disciplined bowling performance saw South Africa restrict Bangladesh to 106, with Marizanne Kapp and Nonkululeko Mlaba once again among the wickets. Tazmin Brits (42) played a key role in the chase, guiding South Africa to a comfortable win in 17.3 overs.
Head-to-head in T20Is, Australia holds a commanding lead over South Africa, with 9 wins from 10 matches. Notably, South Africa’s first and only T20I win to date against Australia came earlier this year on Australian soil, though the hosts went on to clinch the 3-match series, winning the decider.
