Closely contested games and underdogs rising to the occasion have defined the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup so far. However, match no. 10 of the league stage, featuring heavyweights Australia and New Zealand, could well unfold differently. The two sides will clash at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah, on the 8th of October 2024, at 7:30 PM Indian Standard Time (IST). In their season opener, defending champions Australia restricted Sri Lanka to just 93/7, with a well-rounded bowling performance. Megan Schutt led with 3/12 (4), followed by Sophie Molineux’s 2/20 (4), while Ashleigh Gardner and Georgia Wareham took a wicket each. Australia chased the target comfortably, courtesy of Beth Mooney’s unbeaten 43 off 38 balls, supported by Ellyse Perry (17) and Ashleigh Gardner (12), sealing a 6-wicket win.
New Zealand, in their opening fixture, put up an impressive all-round display against India. Georgia Plimmer (34) and Suzie Bates (27) laid the foundation with a 67-run stand, before captain Sophie Devine powered to an unbeaten 57 off 36 balls, leading New Zealand to 160/4. Their bowling unit shone, with Lea Tahuhu (3/15) and Eden Carson (2/34) dismantling India’s top order, while Rosemary Mair’s 4/19 wrapped up a 58-run win.
Head-to-head, Australia holds a 7-win advantage over New Zealand, with 28 wins from 51 matches. Although Australia has dominated in recent games, including a series sweep in September 2024, this face-off between two in-form teams promises to be an exciting battle.
