Bess Heath Half-Century Guides Durham Women to Win Over Warwickshire

Durham Women produced a disciplined all-round display to secure a convincing 27-run victory over Warwickshire Women in the Women’s T20 Blast 2026 clash at Chester-le-Street on May 29. The home side built their innings through a combination of steady partnerships and a powerful middle-order assault before their bowlers struck regularly to prevent Warwickshire from ever gaining complete control of the chase. The result was shaped by a brilliant half-century from Bess Heath and a collective bowling effort that dismantled Warwickshire for 113 in 18.1 overs while pursuing a target of 141.

After being invited to bat, Durham Women suffered an early setback when captain Hollie Armitage was removed by Alexa Stonehouse for just 1, leaving the score at 9/1 in the third over. Before that wicket, Mady Villiers had looked positive with a quick 13 from 13 balls, but she too departed shortly afterward when Mary Taylor struck, reducing Durham to 22/2 in 3.6 overs. At that stage, Warwickshire Women had seized the early initiative through accurate spells from Stonehouse and Taylor.

The innings was rebuilt by Emily Windsor and Bess Heath, who produced the defining partnership of the match. Windsor anchored one end with a composed 31 from 39 deliveries, while Heath counterattacked aggressively. Their third-wicket stand added 80 runs and shifted momentum decisively in Durham’s favour. Heath was particularly dominant, striking eight boundaries and a six in a superb knock of 61 from just 39 balls at a strike rate of 156.41. Windsor’s dismissal for 31 at 102/3 in the 14.2nd over ended a highly productive stand, but Durham had already established a solid platform.

Heath continued to dictate terms as Durham advanced towards a challenging total. Heather Graham managed 4 before becoming Georgia Davis’ lone wicket, while Heath herself eventually fell leg-before to Charis Pavely for a match-changing 61, leaving the hosts at 117/4 in 16.2 overs. Graham’s wicket made it 126/5 in the 18.1st over, but Durham finished strongly thanks to unbeaten contributions from Mia Rogers (12* off 12) and Grace Thompson (7* off 5).

Their unbroken sixth-wicket partnership of 14 runs helped Durham close on 140/5 from 20 overs. For Warwickshire, the wickets were shared around, with Alexa Stonehouse (1/15), Mary Taylor (1/28), Charis Pavely (1/23) and Georgia Davis (1/20) all claiming one wicket each, while Hannah Baker and Amu Surenkumar remained wicketless.

Chasing 141, Warwickshire Women endured the worst possible start when opener Abigail Freeborn was dismissed for a duck by Trudy Johnson with just one run on the board. Meg Austin and Georgia Redmayne attempted to stabilise the innings through a 14-run partnership, but Mady Villiers trapped Redmayne lbw for 9. Austin continued positively and added 41 runs alongside Charis Pavely for the third wicket, Warwickshire’s best stand of the innings. Pavely contributed 18 from 16 balls, while Austin scored 19, but both fell in quick succession as Durham’s bowlers tightened their grip.

Amu Surenkumar struggled for fluency and was removed by Katie Levick for 3, while Chloe Brewer briefly reignited hopes with a fighting 26 from 23 deliveries. Brewer shared useful partnerships with Bethan Ellis and Mary Taylor, but wickets kept falling at crucial moments. Bethan Ellis was dismissed for a single run, while Taylor contributed 12. Stonehouse added 7, and captain Georgia Davis managed only 3 before becoming one of Durham’s late wickets.

The chase steadily unravelled as Durham’s bowlers maintained relentless pressure. Mady Villiers delivered an excellent spell of 2/23 from four overs, accounting for Redmayne and Brewer. Heather Graham matched that impact with 2/23, removing Pavely and Taylor. Katie Levick also finished with 2/23, including the important wickets of Surenkumar and Stonehouse. Trudy Johnson struck early to claim 1/17, Sophia Turner was exceptionally economical with 1/13 from 3.1 overs, and Abigail Glen chipped in with 1/9. Warwickshire were eventually bowled out for 113 in 18.1 overs, with Hannah Baker unbeaten on 2.
