Bio:

Imagine becoming the world’s No.1 T20 bowler at the age of 20. For Sophie Ecclestone, it is no longer an imagination—she has already lived it! Sophie is a left-arm spinner from England known for her accuracy and consistency. Having played for Cheshire since 2013, she was spotted by Lancashire, signing for them in 2015 and making her top-level debut as a 16-year-old that year against Nottinghamshire in Division 1 of the Women’s County Championship.

She was subsequently called up by new coach Mark Robinson into the England squad to face Pakistan in the T20I series in July 2016 and made her England debut aged just 17 in the first game of the series, in a tidy performance that saw her finish with figures of 1 for 21 across her 4 overs. The tall spinner, while bowling, is often compared with New Zealand veteran Daniel Vettori. It was in the 2017 Ashes Test that she made her Test debut, and Alyssa Healy became her first victim. As of 2024, she is the second youngest bowler to take ten wickets in a Test match, achieving this milestone in the Ashes series in England (2023).

Ecclestone’s excellence has been recognized through various awards and accolades. She was named the ICC Women’s Emerging Player of the Year in 2018. In 2020, she topped the ICC T20I bowling rankings, further solidifying her status as one of the premier spinners in women’s cricket. Her impact is also evident in her pivotal role in helping England secure key victories. Her performances in the Women’s Ashes series have been particularly noteworthy, often turning matches in England’s favour. Similarly, her contributions to England’s campaigns in the Women’s Cricket World Cup have been impressive, including being one of the leading wicket-takers in the 2022 tournament, where she helped guide her team to the final.
