Bio:
Heather Knight, one of the world’s leading cricketers, has emerged from the shadow of Charlotte Edwards as a tremendous England captain, culminating in the glory of winning the World Cup at Lord’s in 2017. She made her international debut against India in 2010 after being called up to the squad as an injury replacement for Sarah Taylor. A year later in Sydney, she made her Ashes debut, establishing herself to the point that she was among the 18 players included in the first tranche of women’s central contracts in 2014. Two years later, in 2016, she was appointed as the successor to Edwards – big shoes to fill – as the national team skipper.
Heather Knight is the only England cricketer – female or male – to have recorded centuries in all three international formats. She achieved her 100th ODI cap in 2019 during her side’s tour of Malaysia, where they faced Pakistan. She was also the first to score a fifty and take a five-wicket haul in One Day Internationals. Her tenure as captain has seen a significant rise in the team’s performance, with consistent victories against top international teams, culminating in a World Cup triumph in the 2017 ODI World Cup.
In the 2023 Women’s Ashes series, Heather Knight played a pivotal role in leading England’s remarkable fightback after they were down 6-0 early in the series. In the second ODI at Southampton, Knight scored a brilliant 67, anchoring the innings and helping England secure a vital victory. Her match-winning 75* in the third ODI at Taunton highlighted her ability to handle pressure. In the first edition of the Women’s Premier League, she was picked by the Bangalore franchise. She had an ordinary outing in the initial season, scoring 135 runs in eight matches. Heather was also part of the London Spirit franchise in the inaugural season of ‘The Hundred’. She was awarded the MBE in the 2018 New Year Honours for her services to cricket, particularly for leading England to victory in the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup. Additionally, she was named one of Wisden’s Cricketers of the Year in 2018, one of the most prestigious accolades in cricket.
Heather has scored over 6500 runs and picked up over 80 wickets in more than 260 appearances. It’s hard to think of a more consistent leadership presence in English cricket.
