Bio:
One of the small-town success stories of Indian cricket, Harmanpreet Kaur comes from the city of Moga in Punjab. If you have heard of Harmanpreet Kaur, you are likely familiar with her stunning knock of 171 not out against Australia in the 2017 World Cup semi-final. Following her knock, India marked their first-ever victory against Australia in a knockout match. Currently the captain of the Indian women’s team, Kaur made her debut in 2009 against Pakistan in the ODI format. In the same year, she made her debut in the T20I format. She scored her first ODI century in the Women’s World Cup against England, earning appreciation from England’s former captain Charlotte Edwards.
In April 2013, she was handed the captaincy when Mithali Raj was rested for a limited-overs series against Bangladesh, showing she was next in line. She made her Test debut in the year 2014 against England in an away series. The 2016-17 season was a breakthrough for Kaur, who was given the captaincy reins after a disappointing World Cup at home. Although she lost her first series as captain against the West Indies, she went on to lead the women’s team to their sixth straight Asia Cup title. She received the Arjuna Award in 2017, one of India’s most prestigious accolades.
Harmanpreet became the first Indian cricketer, male or female, to be signed by a foreign T20 league, joining the BBL. She played for the inaugural champions Sydney Thunder and won the franchise’s Player of the Tournament award for her all-around performance in her maiden season. Coincidentally, her century in the T20I format, against New Zealand in 2018. The Indian captain has also received the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award, in fact was the first Indian woman to win this award in September 2022. Her outstanding performance during India’s first ODI series victory in England since 1999 was pivotal, scoring 221 runs across three matches.
The year 2023 belonged to Harmanpreet Kaur as she became the first cricketer to play 150 T20Is and the first captain to lift the inaugural Women’s Premier League title. Later in the year, she captained India to their first-ever Asian Games gold medal in cricket. Wider recognition followed as she was named one of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year, a first for an Indian woman. As of 2024, she has six centuries to her name across formats.
Harmanpreet Kaur, with over 300 appearances and over 6500 runs, has been a pivotal force in the growing popularity of women’s cricket in India. One of the most prominent batters in modern cricket, known for her power and precision with the bat, she also led India to uncharted territories, guiding them to their first-ever T20 World Cup final in 2020. In the same year, she secured India’s inaugural ODI series win against England in a multi-format series before winning a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games. On her father’s insistence, she turned into an off-spinner and has over 70 wickets across formats as of 2024.
