The Bhutan women’s national cricket team, known as The Lady Dragons, represents Bhutan in international women’s cricket under the Bhutan Cricket Council Board (BCCB), an ICC member since 2001. They played their first international match in 2009, against Qatar.
History – Bhutan Women’s National Cricket Team
At the 2009 ACC Women’s Twenty20 Championship in Malaysia, Bhutan made its international debut. They defeated Qatar in their opening game, but they lost to the rest of the group. They did, however, finish ninth out of twelve teams after winning a match against Oman in the ninth-place play-offs. They showed perseverance in the face of few wins in later competitions, like the 2011 edition.
The team then competed in the 2013 ACC Women’s Championship, winning against Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates to finish in fifth place. They were eligible for the 2014 ACC Women’s Premier competition thanks to this accomplishment.
With the ICC’s decision in April 2018 to award all members with Women’s Twenty20 International (WT20I) status, recognition increased. In January 2019, Bhutan made its WT20I debut, playing Hong Kong. They participated in the 2021 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier.
Local Development – Bhutan Women’s National Cricket Team
With its national headquarters in Thimphu and regional offices, the Bhutan Cricket Council Board (BCCB) is in charge of all cricket-related activities in the country, including competitions in more than 60 schools, clubs, and districts. A great deal of effort has been made by BCCB into improving women’s cricket, as demonstrated by specialized high-performance initiatives and strategic development plans. They believe that the endeavors mentioned seek to break the perception that cricket is primarily a male-dominated sport.
