Laura Wolvaardt Joins Adelaide Strikers’ 2000-Run Club During 100th WBBL Appearance

Laura Wolvaardt marked her 100th Women’s Big Bash League appearance in the most fitting fashion, striking a fluent 70 off 50 balls to lead Adelaide Strikers to a 21-run victory over Melbourne Stars in the fourth match of WBBL 12 at the Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide on 31st October 2026.

On a night that celebrated both her longevity and her enduring class, the 27-year-old South African skipper also crossed 2,000 runs for the Strikers, becoming only the fourth player to reach that milestone for the club after Tahlia McGrath, Sophie Devine and Bridget Patterson.

Melbourne Stars captain Meg Lanning won the toss and chose to bowl first, but Wolvaardt and England’s Maia Bouchier ensured Adelaide seized the early initiative. The opening pair added 54 runs, with Bouchier contributing a brisk 30 from 21 deliveries on her Strikers debut against her former team. Wolvaardt, meanwhile, looked in complete control, using the crease beautifully and finding the boundary nine times in an innings built on timing rather than brute force.

After Bouchier’s dismissal, Wolvaardt joined forces with Strikers captain Tahlia McGrath in another decisive partnership. The duo put on 82 runs for the second wicket, blending rotation, placement and occasional aggression to keep the scoreboard moving. Wolvaardt’s 70 came from 50 balls, while McGrath finished unbeaten on 43 from 36 deliveries, giving Adelaide the platform for a strong finish.

Adelaide Strikers eventually posted 185/2 in their 20 overs, their equal second-highest WBBL total. Wolvaardt fell to a superb catch by Annabel Sutherland. Madeline Penna’s explosive 36 not out off 13 balls ensured the Strikers finished with real momentum, adding 76 runs in the final five overs.

For Wolvaardt, the innings carried added significance. She had made her WBBL debut for Brisbane Heat on 10th December 2017 against the Perth Scorchers at North Sydney, scoring 99 runs at a strike rate of 92.52 in 15 innings across 20 matches for the Heat. Her move to Adelaide in 2020 transformed her into one of the competition’s most dependable top-order batters, with her Strikers debut arriving on 25th October 2020 against the Hobart Hurricanes in Sydney.

Her knock against the Stars took her to 2,060 runs for Adelaide Strikers at a strike rate of 113.06 and an average of 29.85 from 79 innings in 80 matches. That places her fourth on the club’s all-time run-scoring list, behind only McGrath, Devine and Patterson, a reflection of both consistency and longevity in one of the world’s most competitive domestic T20 leagues.

Wolvaardt’s best WBBL innings for the Strikers remains her unbeaten 75 from 56 balls against Sydney Thunder at North Sydney on 20th November 2022. Opening alongside Katie Mack, she struck 12 boundaries as Adelaide posted 144/4 before restricting Thunder to 118, sealing a 26-run win. That innings captured the essence of her batting: calm, precise and relentlessly effective.

Overall, Wolvaardt has now amassed 2,159 WBBL runs at a strike rate of 111.92 and an average of 26.65 from 94 innings, including 11 half-centuries in 100 matches with the bat. Her latest fifty was her 11th in the competition and arguably one of her most timely, arriving on the very occasion that underlined her status as a modern WBBL great.

Adelaide’s bowling unit then defended the total with discipline, holding Melbourne Stars to 164/7. Amanda-Jade Wellington led the attack with 3/28, while Ellyse Larosa and Sophie Ecclestone claimed two wickets apiece, ensuring the Strikers began their WBBL 12 campaign with a statement victory.

The Strikers, led by McGrath, will now turn their attention to Brisbane Heat in the 10th match of the tournament on 5th November 2026 at Drummoyne Oval in Sydney, beginning at 10:10 AM IST. For Wolvaardt, though, the opening night of WBBL 12 will long be remembered—not merely for a hundred appearances, but for the authority, elegance and match-winning intent with which she announced the next chapter.
