Melbourne Renegades Add Victorian Keeper-Batter Sophie Reid Ahead of WBBL 12

The Melbourne Renegades have signed Victorian wicketkeeper-batter Sophie Reid for Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 12, adding a player with experience in the Big Bash and state cricket. Reid first entered the competition in WBBL 08, making her debut for the Melbourne Stars. Since 2022, she has become a regular presence in Victorian and WBBL teams, contributing both behind the stumps and with the bat. As a left-handed batter, she can play in the top or middle order, giving the Renegades more flexibility when setting their batting line-up for the season.

Reid has played 30 WBBL matches and scored 260 runs, with the highest score of 46. Her wicketkeeping record includes 15 dismissals, made up of 11 catches and four stumpings. These numbers show her contribution in both roles during her time in the competition. Her ability to handle the gloves and bat in different positions gives the Renegades another option in the T20 format. She will now continue her Big Bash career with a new team as the club prepares for WBBL 12.

At state level, Reid has regularly represented Victoria in the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL). Her biggest milestone in the competition came during the 2024/25 season, when she scored her maiden WNCL century. She made 106 runs against Queensland, adding an important contribution to Victoria’s batting depth. The innings was a significant moment in her one-day career and showed her ability to build a strong score. Her regular appearances for Victoria have helped her gain experience that she can now bring to the Renegades.

Melbourne Renegades head coach Gavan Twining believes Reid’s experience and ability to adapt to different batting positions will benefit the side. He praised her wicketkeeping and the flexibility she offers in T20 cricket. Twining said, “Sophie is a quality keeper who has shown she can bat anywhere in the order, and that flexibility is really valuable in T20 cricket. She knows the Big Bash well and we’re excited to see her in red this summer.” The coach will look to make use of her skills during the upcoming competition.

The Renegades have filled 14 contracted player spots for WBBL 12, with the remaining list spot to be announced after the T20 Spring Challenge finishes. The squad features players from Australia and overseas, including Deandra Dottin and Hayley Matthews from the West Indies, and Chloe Tryon from South Africa. Reid joins a group with experience across different roles. Gavan Twining is listed as the new head coach, and the club will confirm its final contracted player after the Spring Challenge concludes.
