Bangladesh All-Rounder Shorna Akter, 19, Reaches 1000 International Runs

Bangladesh’s promising 19-year-old all-rounder Shorna Akter crossed 1,000 international runs during the second ODI against Australia at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane on Sunday, 11th October 2026. Coming in at number six, Shorna made 8 runs from 7 deliveries, including a boundary, to move past the four-figure mark. Her personal achievement, however, came in a difficult match for Bangladesh, who were restricted to 220/6 and then lost by nine wickets as Australia sealed the three-match series 2-0 with a game to spare.

Australia, led by stand-in captain Tahlia McGrath in the absence of regular skipper Sophie Molineux due to a hip injury, won the toss and opted to field first. Bangladesh posted a competitive 220/6 in their allotted 50 overs, but Australia’s chase proved far too assured. The hosts completed a nine-wicket victory, adding to their seven-wicket win in the series opener and leaving Nigar Sultana Joty’s side with only the third ODI to salvage pride.

Shorna Akter entered the match needing just seven runs to reach 1,000 international runs. Although her innings was brief, the milestone carried weight for a player still in the early stages of an international career that began only in 2023. At 19, she has already become an important middle-order option for Bangladesh, offering a blend of calculated strokeplay and the ability to shift gears when the situation demands, while also bowling handy leg-spin.

Her international journey started in the T20I format, where she made her debut against Sri Lanka at Cape Town on 12th February 2023. In 60 T20I matches and 55 innings, Shorna has accumulated 674 runs at an average of 16.04 and a strike rate of 103.69, with one half-century. Those numbers underline her role as a useful finisher and accelerator in the shortest format, even as she continues to develop greater consistency at the international level.

The ODI format has given Shorna a different kind of challenge. She made her 50-over debut against India at Mirpur on 16th July 2023 and has since featured in 30 ODIs, scoring 327 runs in 26 innings at an average of 15.57 and a strike rate of 66.73. Her unbeaten half-century remains the standout batting performance in the format, but her value to Bangladesh extends beyond runs, with her leg-spin providing the side an additional bowling option.

Shorna’s most memorable ODI innings came during the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, hosted by India and partly in Sri Lanka. Against South Africa at Visakhapatnam on 13th October 2025, she struck a counter-attacking, unbeaten 51 from just 35 balls while coming in at number five. Her knock, laced with three boundaries and three sixes, helped Bangladesh post 232/6, though South Africa eventually won a nail-biting contest by three wickets. That innings offered a glimpse of the match-winning potential she possesses when allowed to play with freedom.

Reaching 1,000 international runs before turning 20 is a meaningful marker for Shorna, particularly in a Bangladesh side still building depth across formats. The milestone is not simply a reflection of individual talent; it also represents her growing responsibility in a young team navigating demanding away conditions against one of the strongest sides in women’s cricket.

Bangladesh’s maiden bilateral ODI series on Australian soil has been a steep learning experience. After defeats by seven wickets and nine wickets in the first two matches, Joty’s team will now look ahead to the third and final ODI at the Allan Border Field on 14th October 2026, beginning at 9:20 AM IST. For Shorna, the series remains an opportunity to build on her milestone with a more substantial contribution and continue her development as one of Bangladesh’s most exciting young all-rounders.
