Nelson and Central Hinds swing bowler Claudia Green has announced her retirement from domestic and international cricket, bringing down the curtain on a career defined by sharp seam movement, clutch performances and a reputation as one of New Zealand women’s cricket’s most dependable pace options.
The 28-year-old right-arm medium pacer, who twice earned selection for White Ferns tours of England, including the squad for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, first broke into the Central Hinds setup in late 2018 and quickly established herself as a strike weapon with her ability to hoop the ball prodigiously. Her presence helped shape a formidable pace trio alongside Hannah Rowe and Rosemary Mair, giving the Hinds a genuine edge in the shortest format.
Green’s place in Central Districts history was secured in the 2024 Super Smash Elimination Final, when she claimed the team’s first T20 hat-trick and derailed Northern Brave in a landmark moment for the side. It was one of the defining spells of her career, and it capped a body of work that also included two hat-tricks in the 2023/24 season, the other coming for South Island in the annual North v South series.
Across her List A and T20 career, Green finished with 54 one-day wickets and 58 T20 wickets, with 50 and 48 of those respectively coming for the Hinds. She also produced a career-best 5/30 for Central in Auckland in late 2023, underlining her value as a disciplined new-ball and middle-overs operator. Her contributions were part of Central’s title-winning Hallyburton Johnstone Shield campaign in 2018/19, while she also delivered a memorable five-wicket haul against England for a New Zealand XI in a 2021 tour match. More recently, she was selected for New Zealand A against England A in 2024.
Green’s cricketing journey extended beyond the outdoor game as well. In Indoor Cricket, she represented New Zealand Under-22 Women at the 2017 Indoor Cricket World Cup in Dubai, a reminder of the versatility that has marked her sporting life.
At 28, Green says she is stepping away to focus on her career and make room for other parts of life, having also worked as a Physical Education graduate and former teacher. Reflecting on the decision, she said, “After giving it a lot of thought over the off-season, the time feels right for me personally, and I’m grateful for everything cricket has offered me over the years.”
She added, “I have mixed emotions. I love playing for the Hinds, but I feel content with my playing career, the opportunities it presented, the memories made, and I’m now looking forward to what’s next.”
Hinds head coach Deepak Joon paid tribute to Green’s impact both on and off the field. “It’s hard to sum up what Claudia has meant to this team,” he said. “Beyond the wickets, runs, catches and moments that won us games, she’s been a genuinely great person, someone every single teammate and staff member has enjoyed being around.”
Joon also highlighted her ability to deliver under pressure, saying Green was “a true match-winner” whose hat-trick in the 2023/24 Super Smash qualifier will be remembered for years. For Central Hinds, her absence will be felt deeply; for Green, it marks the start of a new chapter after a career built on consistency, character and big-match influence.
