Fatima Sana Reveals Ellyse Perry’s Advice After Dream Meeting at T20 World Cup

For most of her cricketing journey, Ellyse Perry has been someone Fatima Sana watched from afar. The Pakistan captain has spoken on several occasions about Perry being her idol — a player whose longevity, consistency and all-round excellence made her one of the biggest inspirations for a young cricketer growing up. On Tuesday night at Headingley, Fatima finally got the chance to experience that admiration from much closer range.

In Pakistan’s T20 World Cup clash against Australia, Fatima not only shared the field with Perry but also dismissed her, ending a brilliant innings of 71(48). Australia eventually secured a dominant 113-run victory, but for Fatima the match offered something far more personal: the opportunity to learn from one of the greatest players the game has produced.

After the game Fatima revealed that she had taken the chance to speak to Perry about the secret behind her success and longevity at the highest level. “I’ve seen her constantly winning games and being a match-winner. I asked her how these performances come by and how she’s developed. She said everyone in the team has a role to play, and that’s how it comes together. She told us to try to grow together and help each other out,” Fatima said.

The response left an impression. Rather than focusing on individual achievements Perry’s message centred on team culture and collective growth, qualities that have been at the heart of Australia’s dominance for more than a decade. For Fatima, who is leading a Pakistan side trying to establish itself among the world’s leading teams, it was a valuable insight from someone who has spent years helping shape one of cricket’s most successful eras.

The interaction off the field was memorable enough, but the contest itself also carried special significance. For the first time in her career, Fatima found herself directly competing against the player she had admired for so long. She bowled to Perry, eventually claimed her wicket, and later had to face the Australian all-rounder with the bat. Reflecting on the experience, Fatima admitted it was a moment she had long imagined.

“For the first time, I bowled to her and for the first time I batted against her as well. When I came out to bat, she was bowling and I wanted to get the maximum runs out of that over because it’s a dream to score boundaries and sixes and hit a bowler who is considered one of the greatest. It was a good contest. That was fun,” she said.

The comments offered a glimpse into the unique dynamic that exists when admiration meets competition. Perry may have been her idol but once the game began, she became an opponent, one Fatima was eager to challenge rather than simply admire. While the result ultimately belonged to Australia, the evening gave Fatima a memory that will stay with her long after the tournament ends.

Few players get the chance to share the field with the person who inspired them to play the game. Even fewer get to dismiss them and for one night in Leeds, Fatima Sana got to do both.
