South Africa’s Nadine de Klerk Reaches 150 International Appearances Against Australia

Nadine de Klerk will join an elite band of South African cricketers when she makes her 150th international appearance for South Africa in the Proteas’ campaign opener against Australia on 13 June at Emirates Old Trafford, a match that doubles as the 3rd game of the ongoing 10th T20 World Cup’s maiden triple-header.

The 26-year-old all-rounder arrives at this milestone having fast become a linchpin of South Africa’s balance: a genuine all-round contributor whose seam bowling and middle-order hitting have combined to produce consistent returns across formats since her ODI debut in May 2017.

De Klerk’s international story began on 9 May 2017 against India in Potchefstroom. Over the 64 ODIs she has featured in, she has compiled 1,058 runs at an average of 24.60 and an aggressive strike rate of 89.05, with three half-centuries to her name. Equally telling are her bowling numbers in the 50-over game: 74 wickets at 29.41 and an economical 5.21, including a best return that features a four-wicket haul (8-1-32-4) against Pakistan in Karachi on 11th September 2023, in the first innings, earning her the Player of the Match as South Africa won that game by 6 wickets. Those figures underline why she has been a trusted option with the new ball and in the middle overs, capable of stemming momentum and chipping in with crucial breakthroughs.

In the shortest format, de Klerk’s influence is no less significant. Since her T20I debut on 13 February 2018, also against India in Potchefstroom, she has played 81 T20Is and batted in 58 innings, scoring 756 runs at an average of 24.38 and a strike rate of 104.56. While a T20 half-century has eluded her so far, her role as a dynamic finisher and stabiliser has been evident through timely cameos and strike rotation.

With the ball, she has taken 59 wickets in 70 bowling innings at 26.79 and an economy of 7.54, numbers that reflect steady, match-defining contributions rather than headline-grabbing flurries.

In the Test format, she has scored 114 runs at a strike rate of 40.71 and an average of 16.28 in 7 innings, including a half-century in 4 matches with the bat for her side, while also picking up 4 wickets at an economy of 4.09 in 5 innings and 4 matches with the ball, since making her debut in the format on 27th June 2022, against England at Taunton.

The upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup will be de Klerk’s fourth edition at this level after debuting at the 2020 tournament. Across 14 World Cup matches, she has scored 70 runs at a strike rate of 97.22 and an average of 23.33 in eight batting innings, and she has been more decisive with the ball: 10 wickets from 13 bowling innings at an average of 25.6 and an economy rate of 6.76. Those World Cup returns show a player who adapts her game to tournament pressures, offering reliable overs up front and tactical acumen in crunch moments.

Facing Australia, led by Sophie Molineux, in Manchester presents a timely test for the Proteas placed in Group A alongside Australia, India, the Netherlands, Bangladesh and Pakistan. South Africa’s captain, Laura Wolvaardt, who finished as the runner-up against New Zealand in the previous edition, will look to leverage de Klerk’s dual skills as the side navigates a packed group stage in England and Wales.

For de Klerk personally, the match is both milestone and mission: a 150th appearance that anchors a career still on the rise, and a chance to shape South Africa’s campaign with the blend of seam discipline and lower-order hitting that has become her hallmark. As the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup unfolds from 12 June to 5 July, de Klerk’s experience and versatility make her one of South Africa’s most valuable assets. Whether deploying her as an opening seam option, a middle-overs enforcer, or a finish-minded batter, the Proteas will be counting on the 26-year-old to help set the tone in Manchester and beyond.
