Zimbabwe Women to Host South Africa Women in First-Ever T20I Series in September 2026

Zimbabwe will host South Africa Women for a historic five-match T20I series at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo in September 2026, marking South Africa’s maiden tour of the country and the first-ever T20I meeting between the two sides.

The five fixtures are scheduled for September 11, 13, 15, 17 and 19, each starting at 1:30 pm local time. The series gives Zimbabwe a rare chance to measure themselves against one of the world’s leading sides on home turf and represents a clear statement of intent from Zimbabwe Cricket to accelerate the growth of the women’s game.

This series arrives with high stakes for Zimbabwe. The senior national side missed out on the 10th ICC Women’s T20 World Cup (England & Wales, 12 June–5 July 2026) and struggled in the 2026 T20 World Cup Global Qualifier, losing all four matches. Their form since has been patchy: a home series against the UAE in September–October 2025 gave local fans some optimism, but subsequent tours to New Zealand and Pakistan ended in consecutive 3–0 white-ball series defeats. Against that backdrop, hosting South Africa, currently among the world’s elite, is both a stern test and a vital opportunity to accelerate development.

“South Africa is one of the strongest teams in world cricket, and this tour presents our players with a valuable opportunity to test themselves against elite opposition in home conditions,” Zimbabwe Cricket managing director Givemore Makoni said. “This series reflects Zimbabwe Cricket’s continued commitment to investing in the women’s game and creating more opportunities for our players to compete at the highest level.”

Regular matches against top-tier nations are essential for player development. Facing South Africa’s depth in batting and bowling will expose Zimbabwe’s squad to higher standards of tempo, tactical nuance and fielding intensity. Queens Sports Club, a venue steeped in Zimbabwean cricket history, will allow local players to exploit familiar pitches and climate, a factor Zimbabwe hopes will narrow the gap against stronger opposition.

High-profile bilateral series increase domestic interest, encourage youth participation, and strengthen the case for more fixtures and investment. Broadcast and media coverage will also put Zimbabwean players in the spotlight ahead of their first-ever tour of India later in the season. After a difficult run in qualifiers and overseas tours, these five matches will provide a clear barometer of improvement for individuals and the team systemically.

Zimbabwe and South Africa have only met twice before in international cricket, both during an ODI quadrangular series in South Africa in 2017. Neither side has faced the other in T20 internationals, making this series a first in the format and a new chapter in regional rivalry. For South Africa, the tour opens a fresh chapter of away assignments, testing their adaptability in African conditions that can vary from the fast, bouncy surfaces they frequently encounter at home.

From the South African perspective, touring a developing cricket nation is an opportunity to build relationships and give game time to emerging players while maintaining competitive intensity.

Zimbabwe’s calendar remains ambitious. Immediately after the South Africa series, they are scheduled to tour India for three T20Is and three ODIs, their first-ever visit to India. That trip will further test squad depth and adaptability and offer another high-profile stage for Zimbabwean cricketers to gather experience against subcontinental opposition.

This five‑match T20I series is more than a set of fixtures; it’s a milestone in Zimbabwean women’s cricket, an intentional push to raise standards through exposure to top opposition and to create momentum ahead of a historic first tour of India. For South Africa, the trip is a test of consistency away from home and an opportunity to deepen squad experience. For fans in Bulawayo, the September fixtures will offer rare, high-quality international action and a chance to witness the next steps in Zimbabwe’s women’s cricket story.
