Shelley Nitschke Signs Three-Year Extension as Australia Women Head Coach to 2029

Australia women’s head coach Shelley Nitschke will remain in charge until at least mid-2029 after signing a three-year contract extension, giving the former all-rounder the opportunity to lead the team through a defining period that includes multiple ICC events, an Olympic campaign and major Ashes contests.

The announcement comes less than a month before Australia begin their Women’s T20 World Cup campaign in England and Wales, where they will attempt to reclaim a global title after falling short in their last two ICC tournaments.

Nitschke, who took over as head coach in 2022 following Matthew Mott’s departure, has overseen one of the most successful phases in Australian women’s cricket. Under her leadership, Australia won Commonwealth Games gold in Birmingham in 2022 before securing a third successive Women’s T20 World Cup title in South Africa in 2023. Australia also retained their position as the world’s top-ranked side in white-ball cricket during her tenure and completed a dominant 16-0 Ashes sweep over England in the multi-format series earlier this year.

Her new deal means she will remain at the helm through the 2026 and 2028 Women’s T20 World Cups, the inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy in 2027 and cricket’s return to the Olympic Games at Los Angeles 2028.

“It’s a privilege to continue coaching this team and working with such an outstanding group of players and staff,” Nitschke said after the announcement. The extension arrives during an important transition period for Australian cricket. Following the retirement of long-time captain Alyssa Healy earlier this year, Sophie Molineux has stepped into leadership duties, while a younger generation featuring Phoebe Litchfield, Georgia Voll and Lucy Hamilton continue to establish itself alongside experienced names like Ellyse Perry, Beth Mooney, Ashleigh Gardner and Megan Schutt.

Australia remains one of the strongest teams in world cricket but enters next month’s World Cup carrying unfinished business. After dominating women’s cricket for much of the last decade, Australia suffered semi-final exits at both the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup and the 2025 ODI World Cup, results that ended their hold on major ICC trophies. Nitschke acknowledged that despite previous success, there remains strong motivation within the group to achieve more. “We’ve achieved a great deal together, but there’s also enormous motivation around what this group can accomplish in the years ahead,” Nitschke said.

The next three years also present one of the busiest periods women’s cricket has experienced. Australia will travel to England for the Ashes in 2027 before hosting their fiercest rivals in early 2029. Multi-format away tours to India and South Africa are also scheduled in a calendar that continues to expand rapidly.

Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg said continuity in leadership would prove vital as the team enters its next phase. “I am delighted Shelley will remain at the helm of the Australian team for the next three years,” Greenberg said. “She is also successfully guiding a period of transition with some brilliant young players joining the team from the large pool of women and girls now participating in our game,” he added.

Australia’s World Cup squad departs for the United Kingdom this week before beginning preparations through unofficial matches against South Africa at Arundel Castle. They will then travel to Cardiff for warm-up fixtures against England and West Indies before the tournament begins on June 13.
