New Zealand Greats Sophie Devine and Lea Tahuhu Join Suzie Bates in Retirement Call

The golden era of New Zealand women’s cricket is officially approaching its sunset. Following the recent news that Suzie Bates will step away after the upcoming T20 World Cup, long-time teammates Sophie Devine and Lea Tahuhu have confirmed they will join her in retirement. For nearly two decades, this trio has been the heartbeat of the White Ferns, and their simultaneous departure marks the end of a legendary chapter that defined a generation.

Sophie Devine, whose name is synonymous with power-hitting and fearless leadership, after having already stepped back from the ODI format late last year, the 2026 T20 World Cup in England will serve as her final bow on the world stage. Devine enters her final tournament with a staggering T20I legacy, having amassed 3,587 runs including a century and 23 fifties, while also proving her worth with the ball by claiming 128 wickets. For her, it’s about leaving the shirt in a better place.

Alongside her, Lea Tahuhu is also ready to hang up the spikes. Known as one of the fastest bowlers to ever grace the women’s game, Tahuhu has spent fifteen years terrorizing openers with her raw pace. With 101 T20I appearances under her belt and 98 wickets at a sharp average of 19.85, she remains the spearhead of the attack. Like Devine, she transitioned out of the one-day game recently to focus her remaining energy on this final T20 title defense. Her absence will leave a massive void in the New Zealand seam attack.

The timing feels like a poetic, if bittersweet, conclusion. Suzie Bates had already set the stage for this swansong tour, bringing with her the weight of 181 T20I matches and a record 4,717 runs. Having her two closest contemporaries join her ensures that the tournament will be an emotional rollercoaster for fans and players alike. These three haven’t just played together; they’ve grown up together, evolving from talented teenagers into the veteran stateswomen who professionalized the sport in New Zealand.

Head coach Ben Sawyer acknowledged the retirement call of the trio. “To have our three most senior players all finishing their careers at the same tournament is a rare and special occasion. All three have had distinguished careers in their own right and given so much to this team and the game in general. There’ll be a time at the end of the tournament to further acknowledge and celebrate the trio, and I know at present they’re very focused on performing well in their final mission with the team.”

While the loss of massive international experience is a daunting prospect for New Zealand Cricket, the veterans are focused on the transition. The squad for the upcoming World Cup notably includes fresh faces like Nensi Patel and Izzy Sharp. Devine and Bates, have both expressed a desire to spend their final weeks in the black cap mentoring this next crop of players, ensuring the bridge to the future is strong.

As the team prepares to fly to England, the narrative is no longer just about defending a trophy; it’s about a grand farewell. There is a sense of last-dance energy surrounding the camp—a final month for fans to witness Devine’s towering sixes, Tahuhu’s blistering bouncers and Bates’ effortless cover drives. It’s the end of an era, but for three of New Zealand’s greatest ever, it’s a chance to go out exactly how they started: together.
