Sharing details of the meeting on social media, Gupta said she had a “great interaction” with Mithali Raj, one of India’s most celebrated cricketers and a pioneer in women’s sport. The Chief Minister also noted Mithali’s support for the Nari Shakti Vandan, linking it to a broader national shift towards greater representation and empowerment of women.

Gupta emphasised that the coming days April 16, 17 and 18 would mark a significant moment in India’s democratic journey, with enhanced representation of women in Parliament expected to take centre stage. She described the development as a step that adds “new depth” to the country’s democratic framework, reflecting the growing participation of women not just in public life, but also in decision-making roles.

The meeting between Gupta and Mithali comes at a time when conversations around women’s leadership are gaining momentum across the country, spanning politics, sports, and other fields. Mithali, widely regarded as one of the greatest batters in the history of women’s cricket, has long been a symbol of excellence and resilience.

Over an international career that spanned more than two decades, Mithali became the highest run-scorer in women’s One Day Internationals (ODIs) amassing over 7,800 runs and setting benchmarks for consistency and longevity. She also holds the record for the most half-centuries in the format and famously registered seven consecutive 50-plus scores, a testament to her remarkable form at her peak.

Her influence extended beyond numbers. Having led India since 2005, Mithali captained the side through multiple phases of transition and growth, guiding them to global prominence. Under her leadership, India reached the final of the 2017 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, a campaign that proved pivotal in bringing the women’s game into the mainstream spotlight in the country.

Gupta’s interaction with Mithali reflects the convergence of two spheres where women have increasingly made their mark in governance and sport. While one has broken barriers in politics, the other has done so on the cricket field, inspiring a generation of young athletes.

The Chief Minister’s remarks on Nari Shakti Vandan also underline the broader narrative of women transitioning from participation to leadership roles. The push for greater representation in Parliament is being seen as a continuation of this journey, aligning with the achievements of women like Raj who have already demonstrated leadership excellence on global platforms.
