Anneke Bosch Targets Series Win as South Africa Women Face New Zealand in 3rd ODI

South Africa head into the series-deciding ODI against New Zealand in Wellington with the contest finely poised at 1-1 and crucial ICC Women’s Championship points at stake. With qualification for the 2029 Women’s Cricket World Cup on the line, the final match carries added significance beyond just the series result.

The Proteas Women have made a steady start to their Championship campaign, sitting third on the table after a mixed set of results against Pakistan. A series win in New Zealand would not only strengthen their position early in the cycle but also provide valuable momentum in a tightly contested qualification race.

Anneke Bosch, who has played a key role in the series, underlined the importance of the decider and the opportunity in front of the team. “A series win is up for grabs, and we really want that, along with the points in the ICC Championship. So it’s a really important game tomorrow. Hopefully it will be another good one, and we’ll be better than the previous game.”

The series itself has swung dramatically between the two sides. South Africa edged a last-ball thriller in the opening ODI, showing composure under pressure, but the second match saw New Zealand respond in record-breaking fashion. Chasing 346, New Zealand completed the highest successful run chase in women’s ODI history, sealing victory with two balls to spare.

Bosch was central to South Africa’s strong batting display in that match, scoring 91 and sharing a crucial 132-run partnership with captain Laura Wolvaardt. Despite falling just short of a maiden century, her innings reinforced her growing importance in the side, particularly in high-pressure situations.

However, the defeat exposed areas of concern, particularly in the field, where South Africa failed to capitalise on key moments. Bosch acknowledged the need for a simpler approach heading into the decider. “Just keeping things simple. I think on the field, just sticking to our plans and sticking to the basics, not trying to overcomplicate it or overthink it, and just taking our chances as well, because we let ourselves down in the field a couple of times in this series.”

Her return to the ODI side has been notable, having come in as a replacement for the injured Dane van Niekerk. It marked her first appearance in the format since the 2025 World Cup final, and she has quickly re-established herself as a dependable presence in the middle order.

Reflecting on her comeback, Bosch emphasised the importance of making the most of opportunities at the international level. “It’s good to be back. I’m happy and grateful to be back. Obviously, when you do get chances, you want to use them. It doesn’t always work out, but you want to make the best of every chance that you get. So I’m happy that it came off, and hopefully I can contribute again in the future and get the team into good positions.”

Bosch had initially missed out on selection for the tour, but used her time away to focus on domestic cricket and preparation. Her response since returning has highlighted both her resilience and value to the side.

As South Africa prepares for the decider, the equation remains clear. With the series level and Championship points at stake, execution in key moments will likely determine the outcome. The focus will be on maintaining composure, correcting mistakes from the previous game and delivering a complete performance.
