Jonathan Batty and Anya Shrubsole Named Southern Brave Women Coaches for Hundred 2026

The coaching landscape for Southern Brave is undergoing a major transformation this summer, and the headline act is the arrival of Jonathan Batty as the new women’s head coach.

Batty, a seasoned former wicketkeeper for Surrey and Gloucestershire, takes the reins from Luke Williams. This isn’t just a random hire; it’s a strategic move by the GMR Group, the franchise’s new owners, to bring in a leader they know intimately through their shared success in the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

Batty arrives with a gold-plated CV in The Hundred. He was the architect behind the Oval Invincibles’ Women dominance in the competition’s early years, steering them to consecutive titles in 2021 and 2022. While he eventually moved on from the Oval, his stock remained high globally. His work with the Delhi Capitals Women in India—where he led the team to four straight finals—proves he knows how to build a winning culture, even if that elusive WPL trophy has narrowly escaped his grasp so far.

The reunion theme runs deep in this appointment. Two of the Brave’s marquee pre-signings, Laura Wolvaardt and Jemimah Rodrigues, have already spent significant time under Batty at the Capitals. By locking in these stars alongside English talents Lauren Bell and Maia Bouchier, the Brave are clearly looking to recreate the tactical synergy Batty is known for. Having familiar faces in the dugout should make the transition seamless as the team aims to go one step further than their runners-up finish last season.

Adding a legendary layer to the backroom staff is the involvement of Anya Shrubsole. As one of the most respected figures in the history of the English game, with 102 T20I wickets to her name and best bowling figures of 5 for 11 including two 4-wicket hauls and a fifer, her presence provides a vital link to the team’s identity. Shrubsole’s tactical brain and her history of performing under the highest pressure complement Batty’s coaching style perfectly. Together, they form a leadership duo that balances external franchise expertise with a deep-rooted understanding of what it takes to win on English soil.

This overhaul isn’t limited to the women’s side. The GMR Group is aligning its global strategy by also appointing Hemang Badani as the men’s head coach, replacing Adi Birrell. Like Batty, Badani is a core member of the Delhi Capitals ecosystem. This “franchise-first” approach suggests that Southern Brave is moving toward a more unified, global style of play, supported by heavy-hitting men’s signings like Jofra Archer and Jamie Smith.

With the women’s auction a sleep away, on March 11, all eyes are on how Batty and Shrubsole will round out their squad. They have a solid foundation and a clear mandate: return the Brave to the summit of the podium. If Batty’s previous track record in London is any indication, the fans at Ageas Bowl have plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the silverware returning to the south coast.
