Kaur’s international story began in March 2009, when she made her debut for India in an ODI against Pakistan. At the time, she was a promising 20-year-old from Punjab with a fearless batting approach and the ability to strike the ball powerfully. Over the next decade and a half, she would go on to become one of the pillars of Indian women’s cricket, leading the team across formats and delivering some of the most memorable performances in the sport.

Today, Kaur stands among the most experienced players in world cricket. She has represented India in 360 international matches, an extraordinary achievement that reflects both her consistency and longevity at the highest level. Across those appearances, she has scored over 8,500 international runs, making her one of India’s most prolific batters.

Much of her reputation has been built in limited-overs cricket, where her aggressive middle-order batting has often changed the course of matches. Among her many innings, one remains iconic, the unforgettable 171 not out against Australia in the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup semi-final at Derby. The knock remains the highest score by an Indian in Women’s World Cup history and is widely considered one of the greatest innings ever played in women’s cricket. It powered India into the final and became a defining moment for the visibility of the women’s game in the country.

Kaur has also been a pioneer in the shortest format. In 2018, she became the first Indian woman to score a century in T20 International (T20I), underlining her ability to dominate bowling attacks and accelerate the scoring rate when needed. Over the years, she has accumulated thousands of runs in T20Is while continuing to be a key player in India’s batting order.

Her influence, however, extends well beyond her batting statistics. As captain, Kaur has led the Indian team during an important phase in the growth of women’s cricket. Under her leadership, the team achieved one of its most historic milestones — winning the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup on home soil in 2025, making her the first Indian women’s captain to lift the trophy. In the shortest format, she has the most wins as captain.

Kaur has also led India to success at multi-sport events, most notably guiding the team to a gold medal at the Asian Games, a Silver at the Commonwealth Games, another landmark achievement that highlighted the rising stature of women’s cricket in the country.

Her longevity is further emphasized by the sheer number of matches she has played. Recently, Kaur became the most-capped player in women’s international cricket, surpassing previous records with more than 360 appearances across formats — a testament to her durability and importance to the team over the years.

Seventeen years after her debut against Pakistan, Harmanpreet Kaur remains central to India’s cricketing ambitions. Her career has been defined by powerful batting, historic performances and inspirational leadership. As she continues to represent India on the international stage, the milestone serves as a reminder of a journey that has helped shape the modern era of Indian women’s cricket.
