From the start of the inning, Alyssa Healy looked to be in ominous touch, attacking the opposition bowlers with fearless intent, finding the gaps in the field with precision, and hitting the boundaries almost at will. Her 158-run knock came off just 98 balls, including 27 fours and two sixes, a performance that completely changed the complexion of the match. Every shot she played seemed to be played with authority, and the fact that she was able to maintain a high tempo throughout her innings was a testament to her importance to the Australian lineup as an opener.

What made the innings even more special was the challenges she overcame. Healy disclosed that she felt cramps. Her calf muscles cramped as she was batting. For a brief time, she thought to herself that she might not be able to continue batting at her usual rate. However, a word of advice from her partner Beth Mooney to “get her hundred first” worked wonders for her. Healy described herself as a “Tin Man” as she struggled to run between the wickets. However, she overcame the challenge to score her century.

“I (started to) cramp at about 85 I reckon, and I was batting with Moons (Beth Mooney) at the time, and both my calves were going and I said, ‘Oh, I’m done. I’m just going to have to swing’, and Moons said, ‘Knuckle down and get your hundred and then see what unfolds after that’.

“I was a bit of a tin man running to the other end for 10 or 12 runs, but then there was a little bit of party time, once you knock off a milestone, it’s an opportunity to put the foot down and I just enjoyed it from there. I’ll remember that one … that’s the last one, right? So, I’ll probably remember that for a long time,” Healy shared.

As soon as she crossed the three-figure mark, Healy’s game became even more aggressive. She was giving it a swing, having a party as she described it. Her innings became even more aggressive as she capitalized on the opportunities to score runs. Her attack on the bowlers was relentless. It was a combination of her determination to overcome the challenges posed by her physical condition and her aggressive batting.

The 409 that Australia scored was a testament to the platform that she built. But more importantly, the innings was a perfect farewell to the 50-over game. Healy signed off her career in the ODIs after playing 126 games and accumulating 3,777 runs at a strike rate of 100. Her numbers also include eight centuries and 19 half-centuries.

But the real legacy of Healy’s career, though, lies in the fearlessness that she brought to the game. Healy’s innings was not just a big score. It was a statement of her resilience, her leadership, and her joy. It was a perfect farewell to the 50-over game.
