BCB Bans Former Selector Monjurul Islam After Jahanara Alam’s Complaint for Misconduct

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially barred former national selector Monjurul Islam from all cricketing activities following a series of serious misconduct allegations. The decision stems from a formal complaint lodged by Jahanara Alam, the former captain of the Bangladesh women’s national team. After a dedicated inquiry into the matter, the board has prohibited Monjurul from holding any direct or indirect role under the BCB’s jurisdiction.

The investigation centered on four specific allegations related to an incident that occurred during the 2022 Women’s World Cup. While the independent inquiry panel noted that two of the claims lacked sufficient evidence to be proven, they found “initial proof of inappropriate behaviour” regarding the other two cases. The panel concluded that his actions constituted a clear breach of harassment and misconduct regulations.

Before his administrative role, Monjurul Islam had a notable career as a left-arm fast-medium bowler for the Bangladesh national team. He represented his country in 17 Test matches and 34 One Day Internationals (ODIs) between 1999 and 2004, often remembered for his role in the early years of Bangladesh’s Test status. However, this latest disciplinary action effectively severs his long-standing professional connection to the sport’s governing body.

In an official statement, the BCB confirmed the gravity of the findings, “Based on the findings of the Independent Inquiry Committee formed by the BCB to examine the complaint lodged by former Bangladesh Women’s National Team Captain Jahanara Alam, the Board has decided to impose a ban on former national cricketer Monjurul Islam from all forms of direct or indirect employment and/or cricket-related activities under the jurisdiction of the Bangladesh Cricket Board”.

Although Monjurul Islam’s formal contract with the board had already concluded in June 2025, the BCB maintained that his past conduct fell well below the professional standards expected of a national representative. The board also indicated that the current ban might not be the final word on the matter, stating, “The BCB is reviewing the recommendations of the Committee and will take any additional measures deemed necessary in light of the report”.

Amidst these disciplinary actions, the BCB also looked toward the future of the women’s game by announcing the inaugural Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL). The tournament is set to take place from April 4 to 14, 2026, with matches hosted in Dhaka and Chattogram. This development marks a significant step forward for female cricketers in the country, even as the board works to address internal systemic issues.

Additionally, the board addressed administrative transitions by granting a one-month extension to the current chief selector, Gazi Ashraf Hossain. The BCB explained that “In view of his intention to step down at the end of his tenure as Chairman National Selection Panel, the Board has decided to offer a one-month extension”. This brief period will allow the board to finalize a successor and oversee a broader reorganization of the selection panel.
