Essex Cricket has secured a key piece of their women’s squad for the long haul, with leg-spinner Abtaha Maqsood putting pen to paper on a new two-year deal. The 26-year-old Scotland talent will now don the Essex colours at least until the end of the end of the 2027 season, bringing her skillful leg-breaks and growing leadership to the team for seasons to come.

Maqsood has been a standout performer in recent years, and her decision to extend feels like a natural fit. “I am delighted that I have the opportunity to extend my time at Essex,” she shared after signing.
“I have learned a lot during my time here and I am excited to continue my progression with the Club. We have an amazing group, and I cannot wait to get going with them again and help to contribute to more success next season.”
In the 2025 season alone, Maqsood turned out for 27 matches, snaring 22 wickets with her trademark guile and variations. She’s not just a domestic force, though—her international caps for Scotland Women have seen her rack up 78 wickets across ODIs and T20Is.
It all kicked off back in 2013 when, at just 12 years old, she first pulled on the Scotland Under-17 kit. By 2018, she was making her senior T20I bow against Uganda Women, and she’s only accelerated since.
Her journey highlights the grit that’s made her a fan favorite. From those early days on the international stage to anchoring Essex’s attack, Maqsood has shown real maturity, especially in stepping up as a bowling leader.
Essex Women’s Performance Director Danni Warren couldn’t hide her excitement about the news. “We are delighted that Abtaha has signed an extension to her contract. Abtaha’s value to our team was underlined last season, taking wickets at crucial times and further growing into her role as a leader in our bowling unit,” Warren said.
“Everyone at Essex is extremely proud to see Abtaha represent her country, Scotland, and watching her flourish with them has been fantastic. We cannot wait to support her in her preparations for both international and domestic cricket ahead of the 2026 season.”
With this deal locked in, Essex are building a stronger, more settled side. Maqsood’s blend of experience and hunger could be the spark they need in upcoming campaigns.
