In a cricketing nation where fast bowling is often celebrated as the ultimate craft, Nashra Sandhu took an unexpected turn. Once determined to steam in as a pacer, it was a single piece of advice from a coach during her college days that changed the course of her journey, to try left-arm spin. Nashra’s story is not just about wickets and statistics but also about persistence, reinvention, and carving a place for herself in a fiercely competitive cricketing landscape.
Selected for Lahore’s under-19 tournament in her first attempt, she faced the challenge of breaking into a star-studded Lahore senior side. The turning point of her career arrived in 2017. A strong showing in a national training camp saw her earn a place in Pakistan’s squad for the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier. She made an immediate impact on debut against South Africa, taking 3/51, and went on to become the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 17 wickets at an astonishing average of 11.05.
While her ODI career steadily blossomed, Nashra’s T20 journey faced ups and downs. A standout performance came against South Africa, where she picked six wickets in three ODIs at an economy rate of just 3.44, reminding the cricketing world of her reliability.
From 74 bowling innings in ODI cricket, Nashra Sandhu has claimed 104 wickets, a testimony to her persistence and value. Her career-best figures of 6/26 underline her ability to dismantle batting orders when conditions favor her craft. Whether in the longer 50-over format or the fast-paced T20 arena, Nashra has grown into a spinner Pakistan can rely on in pressure situations.
For a player who once dreamt of fast bowling, Nashra has spun her own destiny and in doing so, has become a cornerstone of Pakistan’s bowling attack.
