When Sune Luus walked out at Newlands in February 2023 to lead South Africa in the T20 World Cup semi-final against England, few outside the Proteas camp believed they could pull it off. But Luus, with her trademark calm presence and unshakable composure, marshalled her side into the final, the first time South Africa had reached that stage in a senior ICC World Cup.
That moment didn’t just mark a team breakthrough; it cemented Luus’ reputation as a player who thrives when the spotlight burns brightest. Luus has long been one of South Africa’s most underappreciated cricketers, rarely flamboyant, rarely headline-grabbing, yet indispensable in almost every role she has been asked to play.
Her journey began precariously: batting in boys’ teams from the age of seven, making her provincial senior debut at just 13, and then, three years later, being fast-tracked into the national side as a leg-spinning all-rounder. By 16, she was already wearing South Africa’s colors.
Sune Luus’ International Career
In 2016, she delivered a performance for the ages against Ireland, becoming only the second woman in ODI history to score a half-century and take a five-wicket haul in the same match. Later that year, she equaled Anisa Mohammed’s record for the most ODI wickets in a calendar year, with 37. She would go on to become the first woman to take two six-fors in ODI cricket, her 6/36 against New Zealand in 2020 underlining her ability to turn games single-handedly.
With bat in hand, Luus is equally formidable. Her Test highest of 109 in challenging conditions in Chennai against India confirmed her credentials as a batter who could adapt and lead the fight when others faltered. Across 114 ODI innings, she has amassed 2489 runs, including a career-best 107*, again in the subcontinent against Pakistan, and collected 116 wickets, a rare all-round double that places her in elite company.
Her career is also a reflection of sacrifice and determination. Balancing cricket with her studies in communication science, often spending more time on the field than in classrooms, she has built her life around the sport. From choosing cricket over tennis in her youth to scoring big runs and captaining the national team to new heights, Luus has embraced opportunities that have expanded her game beyond borders.
