Every athlete has a story, but few are as dramatic and inspiring as that of Tazmin Brits. Before she ever picked up a cricket bat, Brits was one of South Africa’s brightest track and field prospects. A gifted javelin thrower, she won gold at the 2007 World Youth Championships in Athletics and was firmly on course for the 2012 Olympic Games.
But destiny intervened and an unfortunate road accident left her hospitalized for two months and forced her to walk away from her Olympic dream. For many, that would have been the end of a sporting career. For Brits, it was just the beginning of another.
Tazmin Brits’ International Career
Her comeback came not on the runway, but on the cricket field. In 2018, she made her South Africa debut in T20 Internationals (T20Is) against Bangladesh, immediately catching attention with her dynamism and athleticism in the field. Batting consistency, however, required patience. In 2022, she finally announced herself on the big stage with her maiden ODI century, a brilliant 118 against Ireland.
Since then, Brits has become a highlight in the South African top order. In 39 ODI innings, she has scored 1419 runs, including that career-best 171*, proving her ability to anchor innings and accelerate when needed.
In T20Is too, she has made her mark, none more memorable than in the 2023 T20 World Cup semi-final against England, where she struck a composed yet commanding 68 off 55 balls, propelling South Africa into their first-ever T20 World Cup final. That innings not only showcased her skill under pressure but also her growth into a senior player capable of carrying a nation’s hopes.
Her rise has been steady and decorated. Named CSA Women’s Provincial Cricketer of the Year in 2020, she later received her first central contract in 2022, cementing her place among South Africa’s elite.
More than her numbers, Brits represents resilience and reinvention. To move from a crushed Olympic dream to becoming one of South Africa’s most dependable cricketers is a story of sheer willpower.
Today, as South Africa enters a new era of serious challengers on the global stage, Tazmin Brits stands not only as a top-order batter but also as a symbol of what it means to rise from setbacks and build a second act in sport.
