List of Indian Cities That Have Hosted the Women’s Cricket World Cup

The highly anticipated World Cup is now just a month and a half away. On September 30, host nation India is set to face co-host Sri Lanka. Originally scheduled to be played at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, the match is now in doubt after the Karnataka government declared the venue ‘unsafe’.

This decision follows a tragic stampede during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL victory celebrations, which resulted in the deaths of 11 fans and left many others injured. Reports suggest that Greenfield Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram is likely to host the Women’s World Cup matches that were originally scheduled to take place in Bengaluru.

In this article, we take a look at the all the Indian cities that were picked to host the previous editions of the Women’s ODI World Cup.

Women’s ODI World Cup 1978

The 1978 Women’s Cricket World Cup was the tournament’s second edition. Although South Africa was initially considered as the host, the plan was abandoned due to the international sporting boycott in place during the apartheid era. As a result, the tournament was hosted by India for the first time.

The 1978 Women’s World Cup was held across four venues in India. Eden Gardens in Calcutta and Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur each hosted one match, while Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium in Hyderabad hosted two matches, including the final between England and Australia, and Moin-ul-Haq Stadium in Patna also staged two matches.

Women’s ODI World Cup 1997

The 1997 Women’s Cricket World Cup, referred to as the Hero Honda Women’s World Cup, was the sixth edition of the event and took place in India. It featured a record 11 teams competing in 32 matches, played across 25 cricket grounds in 21 cities.

The 1997 Women’s Cricket World Cup matches were held across 25 venues in 21 cities throughout India. Each city hosted between one and two matches during the tournament. Single matches were played at venues including Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Eklavya Sports Stadium in Agra, Feroz Shah Kotla and Karnail Singh Stadium in Delhi, Gangothri Glades Cricket Ground in Mysore, Gymkhana Ground in Secunderabad, Indira Gandhi Stadium in Vijayawada, Jamia Millia Islamia University Ground in New Delhi, K.D. Singh Babu Stadium in Lucknow, M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Moin-ul-Haq Stadium in Patna, Nahar Singh Stadium in Faridabad, Mohan Meakins Cricket Stadium in Ghaziabad, Nehru Stadiums in Gurgaon, Indore, and Pune, Punjab C.A. Stadium in Chandigarh, Vidarbha C.A. Ground in Nagpur, Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, and Inderjit Singh Bindra Stadium in Mohali. Two matches were held at Harbaksh Stadium and Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium in Hyderabad, MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Nehru Stadium in Pune, Reliance Stadium in Vadodara, and Sector 16 Stadium in Chandigarh. Additionally, Gymkhana Ground in Hyderabad hosted one match.

Women’s ODI World Cup 2013

In 2013, India hosted the Women’s Cricket World Cup for the third time, marking the tournament’s tenth edition. Matches took place at several venues, including Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, which hosted the finals between the West Indies and Australia. Other venues included the Bandra Kurla Complex Ground and the Middle Income Group Club Ground in Mumbai, as well as Barabati Stadium and DRIEMS Cricket Stadium in Cuttack.

The 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, the 13th edition of the event, will be co-hosted by Sri Lanka and India. In India, matches were originally planned to take place in four cities: Bengaluru, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, and Indore. While games are set to take place at Assam Cricket Association Stadium in Guwahati, ACA–VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam, and Holkar Stadium in Indore, the matches originally planned for M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru is now in question. Following the Karnataka Government’s declaration that the stadium is unsafe, the ICC and BCCI are expected to announce a new venue soon, with Greenfield Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram emerging as the leading candidate to replace Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy.
