But a new tournament, set to launch in 2026, is aiming to rewrite that narrative and make cricket truly for everyone.
The Stokes-Knight Cup, named after England greats Ben Stokes and Heather Knight, is a groundbreaking T20 tournament conceived by former England captain Michael Vaughan, is all set to become a milestone moment for the sport in the United Kingdom.
Unlike most prestigious cricketing competitions that have traditionally revolved around private schools, this initiative is exclusively for state school students – a group often underrepresented in elite cricket circuits.
The format is simple yet powerful: state schools across England will compete in regional knockout qualifiers, with the ultimate dream of playing the finals at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, the Home of Cricket.
The tournament is named after Ben Stokes and Heather Knight, two of England’s most respected cricketing figures and both state-school educated. Their backing is more than symbolic.
Stokes, who has publicly voiced his support, believes this competition can “break the barrier between state school sport and professional cricket.” Knight, too, sees this as an opportunity to inspire girls and boys alike to dream big regardless of their background.
This cup came about following a 2023 report by the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) that stated: “elitism and class-based discrimination” was due to the lack of cricket in state schools.
The Stokes-Knight Cup, with its promise of accessibility, inclusion, and aspiration, is a step in the right direction to bridge between grassroots passion and elite opportunities. More importantly, it sends a strong message to young cricketers in state schools.
