Day 4: Ayaka Kato-Stafford and Alex Smith Guide Japan and the Philippines to Their First Wins

The first game between Hong Kong and the Philippines on the 3rd day of the ongoing Women’s T20I Pentangular series was washed out without a ball being bowled. China sealed the 2nd game of the day against Mongolia by 7 wickets.

Japan, led by skipper Mai Yanagida, was up against China, led by skipper Xu Qian, in the first game of the 4th day of the tournament. Tournament’s match number 8 saw the clash between the Philippines, led by skipper Angela Busa, and Mongolia, led by skipper Odzaya Erdenebaatar, in the 2nd match of the 4th day of the Pentangular Series 2025.

Kurumi Ota and Ayaka Kato-Stafford’s all-round show gives Japan a win

Japan posted a competitive total of 94/7 in their quota of 20 overs, on the back of a solid 58-run opening partnership between Kurumi Ota (18 off 32 balls) and Ayaka Kato-Stafford (36 off 41 balls), after skipper Mai Yanagida won the toss and opted to bat first. None of the other Japanese batters entered the double digits with the bat for their side.

Mengting Liu (4-1-18-2), Cai Yuzhi (4-0-24-2), skipper Xu Qian (4-0-10-0), and Wang Huiying (4-0-20-1) were the stand-out performers with the ball for China.

Chasing a target of 95, China were bundled out for 70, with three balls to spare, falling 24 runs short of the target. The 27-run partnership for the 3rd wicket between Gong Yuting (13 off 16 balls) and Mingyue Zhu (13 off 15 balls) was the highest partnership of the run chase. Jiaping Li (11 off 22 balls) was the only other batter to enter the double digits with the bat for China.

Kurumi Ota (4-0-13-3) was the stand-out performer with the ball for Japan. Ahilya Chandel (3.3-0-11-2), Nonoha Yasumoto (3-0-5-1), and Ayaka Kato-Stafford (4-0-14-1) played their part with the ball for their side.

Alex Smith and Katie Donovan power the Philippines to a thrashing 118-run win

The Philippines batters stepped up to the occasion and posted a massive total of 167/6 in their quota of 20 overs, after the Mongolian skipper Odzaya Erdenebaatar won the toss and opted to bowl first. The 54-run partnership between Amelia Valdez (13 off 20 balls) and Alex Smith, followed by another vital 38-run partnership for the 3rd wicket between Katie Donovan (34 off 27 balls) and Alex Smith (49 off 56 balls), played a massive role in taking their side closer to the 170-run mark.

Oyunsuvd Amarjargal (4-0-19-1) was the standout performer with the ball, while Myagmarzaya Batnsan (4-0-41-2) and Jargalsaikhan Erdenesuvd (4-0-23-0) played their part with the ball for their side.

Chasing a huge total of 168, Mongolia were restricted to 49/6 in their quota of 20 overs, falling short by a massive 118 runs. Oyunsuvd Amarjargal (17 off 40 balls) and skipper Odzaya Erdenebaatar (10 off 26 balls) were the only batters to enter the double digits with the bat for their side in the run chase.

Karri Gullem Keen (3-2-4-3) and Katie Donovan (4-1-4-0) were exceptional with the ball for the Philippines, while Jhon Andreano (4-0-12-1), Reyven Castillo (1-0-1-1) and Alex Smith (4-0-14-1) played their part with the ball for their side. With this win, the Philippines registered their first victory in the ongoing tournament.
