The countdown to the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 has officially begun, and setting the stage for an intense buildup will be a blockbuster series between two global giants—India and Australia. In what promises to be a thrilling precursor to the mega event, the Australia Women’s team will tour India in September 2025 for a three-match ODI series, with all games scheduled to be played at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai under lights.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed the highly anticipated schedule, confirming that the matches will be held on September 14, 17, and 20, each beginning at 1:30 PM IST. The series serves as the final dress rehearsal for both sides before they head into the World Cup, which is set to take place in India from September 29 to October 26. The tournament schedule is yet to be released, but the stakes couldn’t be higher for either team.

This isn’t just any bilateral series, it’s a fierce face-off between two teams with unfinished business. For India, captained by Harmanpreet Kaur, this will be their last opportunity to test their strengths and sort out combinations after their upcoming England tour, which runs from June 28 to July 22, comprising five T20Is and three ODIs. Between now and the World Cup, these are the only two confirmed assignments for the Indian women.

Australia, the reigning world champions, will be eyeing this series as a statement of intent. Historically, they’ve dominated the rivalry, winning 46 out of 56 ODIs against India, who have managed to secure just 10 victories. The last time India celebrated a win over Australia was on September 21, 2021, when they famously ended Australia’s 26-match winning streak. Since then, it’s been all one-way traffic—Australia have won seven straight ODIs against India.

Their most recent battle on Indian soil came in December 2023, when Australia blanked the hosts 3-0 in Mumbai. That series saw the visitors clinch the games with clinical precision—winning the first ODI by 6 wickets, the second by a narrow 3-run margin, and utterly dominating the third with a 190-run victory.

Fast forward to December 2024, and Australia once again displayed their supremacy at home by sweeping the series 3-0. The margins were brutally emphatic: a 5-wicket win in the opener after bundling India for just 100, followed by triumphs of 122 runs and 83 runs in the next two games.

The 2024 series in Australia also introduced a new star—Georgia Voll, who made an unforgettable debut by amassing 173 runs in three games, including a stellar 101. For India, Smriti Mandhana stood tall amidst the chaos with 122 runs, highlighted by a superb 105.

On the bowling front, it was business as usual for Australia with Megan Schutt (8 wickets), Ashleigh Gardner (7), and Annabel Sutherland (6) leading the charge. India’s only real bowling spark was Arundhati Reddy, who grabbed 4 wickets in a single appearance.

Not only will this serve as a final tune-up for both teams ahead of the World Cup, but it also reignites one of the most compelling rivalries in modern women’s cricket. Chennai will be the battleground, and the firepower on display ensures these aren’t just ODIs—they’re auditions for glory on the grandest stage.
