Alice Capsey and Lauren Filer Added to England Women Squad Ahead of 3 ODIs Against West Indies

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming ODI series, England Women have called up the dynamic Alice Capsey and pace sensation Lauren Filer to their squad for the three-match ODI showdown against the touring West Indies, starting 30 May at County Ground, Derby.

After clinching an emphatic 3-0 T20I series win over the Hayley Matthews-led West Indies side, England’s preparations for the longer white-ball format hit a minor speed bump when veteran campaigner Heather Knight suffered a hamstring scare in the third T20I.

Knight, who battled discomfort after running a quick single in the 19th over, received on-field medical attention and powered through to remain unbeaten on a gutsy 66* off 47 balls. Her resilience steered England to 144/5, ultimately enough for a 17-run victory and a resounding series clean sweep.

However, Knight’s fitness remains under close scrutiny, with sources confirming that she’s getting a scan on her hamstring. The selectors have been proactive in this situation, to ensure England’s batting firepower remains uncompromised, recalling prodigious all-rounder Alice Capsey to bolster the ODI ranks.

Alice Capsey hasn’t had much of an opportunity to showcase her prowess with the bat, courtesy of strong performances from the English top-order in the T20I series. Her fearless stroke play and handy off-spin are seen as a ready-made replacement in the middle order.

Although her ODI experience is less extensive, she has the temperament and the potential to deliver in the ODI format for England. Only recently, in the inaugural Women’s One Day Cup, Capsey amassed 317 runs from 7 outings in the first-leg fixtures, and her best so far of 125 came in her most recent One Day outing.

Adding further depth to the bowling department is the return of fast bowler Lauren Filer. Having been out of action since the Pink Ball Test in the Women’s Ashes at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground in January, she has finally recovered from her knee injury.

Filer has now been declared fully fit and re-joins the squad with eyes set on making an immediate impact. Filer’s raw pace and ability to generate bounce are assets England will value on what is expected to be slightly in favour of the pacers in terms of the surface on offer in Derby.

Her return could not be timelier; with England’s fast-bowling group stretched in recent months, Filer’s presence brings balance and new options to captain Nat Sciver-Brunt’s bowling arsenal. With her proven ability to unsettle established batters and provide breakthroughs in the middle overs, Filer’s comeback could prove pivotal across the three-match series.

The new era of English Cricket under the duo of Nat Sciver-Brunt and Charlotte Edwards at the helm has begun with a bang, as the home side is riding high after their T20I dominance and will look to maintain momentum as they transition to the ODI format. Led by Nat Sciver-Brunt, the hosts have shown impressive squad depth and adaptability. The addition of Capsey and Filer reflects both a commitment to youth and a focus on squad flexibility as they build towards bigger tournaments on the horizon.

With the West Indies eager to bounce back under Hayley Matthews, the ODI series promises to deliver competitive cricket, strategic battles, and further opportunities for England’s next generation to shine.
