Former English cricketer and legendary figure Charlotte Edwards has been appointed as the new head coach of the England women’s cricket team. This move by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) aims to revitalize the team after a 16-0 thrashing at the hands of Australia in the Women’s Ashes 2025.

Edwards brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success. As a former captain, she led her team to many wins, including two World Cups and five Ashes series triumphs. Since her transition to coaching, she has led the Mumbai Indians to two Women’s Premier League (WPL) titles in three seasons and taken the Southern Vipers to five titles, two of which were in the Charlotte Edwards Cup, England’s now-discontinued domestic T20 competition named after her.
Edwards has already named Nat Sciver-Brunt to succeed Heather Knight as captain. Native English player Lauren Bell believes Charlotte can instill a winning mentality. “A lot of people are talking about a new era and a fresh start, and it’s great. I couldn’t think of anyone better to take charge than Lottie.
“She’s vastly experienced and very successful and it’s a really exciting time for the group. Nattie is very respected in our group; she’s been a wonderful player over the years so I’m excited to see where we can go. It’s a new start and we’re pretty clear where we are moving forward,” said Bell.
Edwards’ immediate challenge will be two home series against West Indies and India, followed by the ICC Women’s World Cup in India later this year and the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup at home in 2026.
“Lottie, first and foremost, understands how hard it can be as a sport and how tough our job is at times. She broke it down; we’ve got really clear goals about how we’re going to play our cricket and what we want to achieve. Hopefully Lottie will come in with a winning mentality and we can hopefully try and actually win some cricket,” added Bell, as she spoke at the launch of next year’s T20 World Cup at Lord’s.
Bell believes that it’s an exciting opportunity to achieve something significant in the sport, with the home T20 World Cup 2026 set to take place in England.
As Edwards takes the helm, the England women’s cricket team looks forward to a new era of playing good cricket and aims to reclaim their position at the pinnacle of international women’s cricket.
