Becky Grundy has reaffirmed her commitment to Western Australia Cricket Association (WACA) and the Perth Scorchers, signing a two-year contract extension that will see her continue as Head Coach until at least the end of the 2026-27 domestic season.

Since stepping into the role ahead of the 2020-21 campaign, Grundy has played a crucial role in shaping the high-performance structure for WA’s female cricketers, nurturing a young and ambitious squad.
Grundy’s association with WA Cricket began as an assistant coach during the 2019-20 Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) season, where she was instrumental in helping WA secure their maiden WNCL title. Her influence quickly grew, and she assumed full control of both WA and the Scorchers, guiding the teams through their domestic campaigns with a sharp tactical mind and a focus on player development.
Balancing her dual responsibilities, Grundy also took charge of the Perth Scorchers’ Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) team ahead of WBBL|09, following the departure of Shelley Nitschke, who now leads the Australian Women’s team.
Having previously worked as Nitschke’s assistant, Grundy was an integral part of the Scorchers’ historic WBBL|07 triumph. Her first season as Head Coach saw the team qualify for the finals, reinforcing her reputation as a strong leader. The Scorchers remained competitive in WBBL|10 even though they did not qualify for the finals.
Her ability to build deep connections with players and staff has been a cornerstone of her coaching approach. Known for her strategic clarity and player-first mentality, Grundy has cultivated an environment where athletes thrive, and her efforts have been widely recognized within Australian cricketing circles.
Her growing stature in the coaching landscape has also earned her a significant national opportunity. Grundy has been entrusted with leading Australia A in a multi-format series against England A, scheduled to begin in Sydney this month. This assignment marks her first chance to oversee a national side, providing yet another platform for her to showcase her expertise across T20s, one-dayers, and a four-day contest.
Reflecting on her contract extension, Grundy expressed her excitement about continuing her journey with WA and the Scorchers, “I am excited to continue as Head Coach for another two years, working with a really driven and talented group of players and staff at WA and the Scorchers. I have really enjoyed my time here so far, and I am very glad WA Cricket has shown faith in me.
We’ve worked really hard to create a team environment where our athletes can thrive, and I’m looking forward to continuing on that journey for the next couple of years. I know everyone within the playing group and staff are so determined to achieve team success, and I am really confident that success is just around the corner for us,” she said.
WA Cricket’s General Manager of High Performance, Kade Harvey, highlighted Grundy’s invaluable contributions, both as a leader and as a visionary shaping the future of WA’s elite women’s program, “Becky has made a significant impact in five seasons as Head Coach of WA and the two seasons at the helm of Perth Scorchers, and we’re confident both teams will continue to grow under her guidance. Since joining WA Cricket, Becky has spent a lot of time building strong relationships with staff and players who value and respect the way she operates.
Becky also reads and understands the game well and has a clear and ambitious vision for our elite women’s program. It is a great opportunity for Becky to be Head Coach of Australia A next month, and we look forward to her leading both WA and the Scorchers for the next two years,” he said.
Grundy’s contract extension also comes at a pivotal time for the Perth Scorchers, as they look to bolster their squad ahead of WBBL|11. With the local player contracting embargo set to lift soon, the team is expected to make crucial recruitment decisions to strengthen their batting lineup—an area that proved costly last season.
Scorchers currently has six players secured for the upcoming season, including Australian stalwarts Beth Mooney and Alana King, while New Zealand’s Sophie Devine remains on a multi-year deal. However, the Scorchers fell short of expectations last summer, missing out on the finals for the second consecutive season.
Meanwhile, WA endured a tough WNCL campaign, finishing at the bottom of the table in 2024-25 with only three wins from 12 matches. Their bowling unit suffered due to injuries, but individual performances stood out—wicketkeeper-batter Maddy Darke, along with spinners Amy Edgar and Lilly Mills, all delivered impressive seasons that earned them Australia A call-ups.
At just 34 years old, Grundy’s coaching career is already packed with achievements. A former England international, she represented her country in seven ODIs and 12 T20Is, claiming nine and 11 wickets, respectively. Now, as she extends her tenure with WA and the Scorchers, all eyes will be on her ability to transform potential into championship-winning performances.
With her sharp cricketing intellect and unwavering commitment, Becky Grundy remains at the heart of WA’s and Perth Scorchers’ ambitions. As both teams aim for silverware, her leadership will be instrumental in shaping their path to success.
