As women’s cricket gears up for the much-anticipated ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup later this year, hosts Sri Lanka, India, and South Africa are set to lock horns in a high-stakes One-Day Tri-Nation series in Colombo.
Scheduled to take place in April-May 2025, this tournament will serve as a crucial preparatory ground for the three teams as they hone their strategies ahead of the global spectacle in the coming months.

The tournament will be played entirely at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium (RPICS) in Colombo, with Sri Lanka and India kicking off proceedings. Each team will play four matches in the round-robin format, with the top two advancing to the final, set to take place on May 11, 2025. All games will be played as day fixtures.
India enters the tournament as the highest-ranked team among the three, sitting at third place in the ICC Women’s ODI rankings. Earlier this year, the Indian side enjoyed a successful bilateral ODI series against Ireland at home.
South Africa, ranked fourth in the world, they last played a three-match ODI series against England late last year but fell short, losing 1-2. Sri Lanka, ranked seventh, are the reigning Women’s Asia Cup champions and have shown promising signs in white-ball cricket.
Following the Tri Series, the Indian women’s team will embark on a tour of England in June-July, featuring five T20Is and three ODIs. The Tri-Series was a welcome addition to South Africa’s calendar, which previously had a tour of the West Indies scheduled for June as their next international assignment.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan team is currently on a white-ball tour of New Zealand, and most Indian players are participating in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) at home, with some South African players also in action.
This tri-series will provide all three teams with a golden opportunity to assess their squad strengths, experiment with different batting orders, and refine their bowling attacks. The performances here could very well shape the fortunes of these teams in the 2025 Women’s World Cup, to be held in India later this year.
