More domestic players are required for Women’s IPL – Diana Edulji

Former cricketer and current Committee of Administrator (CoA) member Diana Edulji believes that more domestic cricketers are needed for Women’s IPL.

“We need a big pool of domestic players, we do not want only the foreigners to come here and play”, she said to ANI.

With the game moving forward in the right direction in the country, more girls are taking up cricket professionally. Edulji believes that the number of female domestic players will increase as the years go by.

Edulji, who was a prominent woman cricketer of India represented the country in 20 Tests and 34 ODIs. She is the third-highest wicket-taker in women’s Tests. In 2017 she was appointed in the BCCI administration panel by the Supreme Court of India.

In 2019, Women’s T20 Challenge was conducted in India which saw the participation of female players from countries like England, New Zealand, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh apart from India. The tournament had 3 teams – Velocity, Trailblazers and Supernovas which played 3 games amongst each other. The top two teams Velocity and Supernovas qualified for the final, which was won by Supernovas.

This move was like taking baby steps towards the dream of Women’s IPL. Hopefully, we’ll get to see a full-fledged Women’s IPL in near future.
