Jemimah Rodrigues scores her maiden ODI century and becomes the 4th fastest Indian (in terms of innings) to 1,000 ODI runs en route to her stylish knock.
The young 24-year-old middle-order batter from Mumbai, Jemimah Rodrigues made her ODI debut at the age of 17 years and 188 days on 12th March 2018 against Australia in the 1st ODI at the Reliance Stadium in Vadodara.
Over the years, she has established herself as one of the most dependable batters in the middle order for India, with her stylish and at the same time elegant style of approach towards her game. Her maiden half-century in the format came on 24th January in the 1st ODI of the series against New Zealand. She scored an unbeaten half-century (81* off 94 balls) at McLean Park, Napier to guide her side over the line as an opener alongside Smriti Mandhana.
She got to the 500 runs mark in the format on 22nd July 2023 in the 3rd ODI against Bangladesh when she scored an unbeaten 33*(45 balls) at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur. The Indian women’s team led by the stand-in skipper Smriti Mandhana in the absence of Harmanpreet Kaur is hosting Ireland for their first-ever bilateral ODI series in India from 10th to 15th January 2025 (Wednesday).
Jemimah Rodrigues, batting at number 4, had a disappointing start to the series with a six-ball 9, including a couple of boundaries, in the 1st ODI at the Niranjan Shah Stadium, in Rajkot. However, she capitalised on her next opportunity, by notching up her maiden ODI century in style with a boundary, getting there in just 90 balls in the 2nd ODI of the three-match series.
She departed on the very next ball in her bid to maximise the scoring in the final over of the innings bowled by Arlene Kelly, she dragged the ball onto the stumps off a thick inside edge. It is also her career-best score in the format, surpassing her previous best (86 off 78 balls) against Bangladesh on 19th July 2023 in the 2nd ODI of the three-match series at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, in Mirpur.
En route to her knock (102 off 91 balls), she also completed 1,000 runs in the ODI format, becoming the 4th fastest Indian in terms of the number of innings (40 innings) after Mithali Raj (29 innings), Deepti Sharma (29 innings), Jaya Sharma (30 innings), Harmanpreet Kaur (30 innings), and the stand-in skipper Smriti Mandhana (33 innings) to achieve the remarkable milestone. She reached the landmark in style with a cracking boundary on the 4th ball of the 24th over of the innings bowled by Georgina Dempsey.
Her tally of runs (1,089 runs) in the format also includes 6 half-centuries at a strike rate of 83.06 and a decent average of 29.43 in 40 innings with the bat for her side so far. India eventually posted their highest-ever total of 370/5 in the ODI format in their quota of overs, surpassing their previous best of 358/2, against Ireland in May 2017 and 358/5 against the West Indies in December last year.
